Hi Folks,

I am not sure if this belongs here but it is just a little R/C related. I am looking for an excuse to drive from NJ to Eastern Indiana so that I can pick up a plane that I have placed a bid on here at RCU. I was thinking that I could tie this in with a family trip to the Dayton Air Show in mid-July. I have never been there (to the show) so I thought I would ask the question here. Is it worth the drive from NJ? This would need to be a long weekend trip for us and I will only spend one day (Saturday) at the show. Is that enough time?

Any feedback you can give or pointers for attending the show is appreciated. Thanks.

Steve

If you are talking about the full scale show (which I think you are) the Dayton Air Show is AWESOME!

I have been once and spent just about the whole day there and it was the coolest thing I have ever seen.

The Blue Angels performed and there were every kind of plane imaginable there. Also, I met Patty Wagstaff and saw her fly. It is well worth the trip. It would take most of the day just to browse the planes parked there. Plus there are all kinds of demonstrations. Very cool.

If you go to Dayton, plan at least one day or more to visit the Air Force Museum. It is awesome.

My wife and I were discussing this tonight and I think that we are a go on this one. I have to look into lodging and the actual mileage - it's going to be a long one (drive) just for a weekend visit, but I think it would be worth it. I have seen some of the performers at a local airshow in Sussex, NJ and personally I would take the drive just to see Jimmy Franklin and his jet assisted Waco! Thanks for the feedback.

If you go to Dayton keep your eyes open Glacier Girl the p-38 that was pulled from the ice in greenland and restored is supposed to be there and flying. Would love to be there, but can't make it this year. ( whine, pout, whine, pout, snivel snivel.) darn it.

egor,

Thanks for the tip - I saw the documentary on that one and it should be real interesting.

I have another question. Is it OK to get tickets at the gate or should I try to get them in advance?

I believe that tickets at the gate will be fine. You could purchase them in advance so you don't have to stand in line to buy them at the gate.

If you love planes, you will love the Dayton Airshow. Went last summer for the 3rd time, and have not been disappointed at all. As was said before, take a day also to hit the Airforce Museum. Living here in Dayton, we tend to take it for granted, but there is so uch going on here in the aviation field, you about every weekend there are fun flys, scale flys, big bird flys, xtreme aerobatic competitions. Just a great place to be in the summer and in the spring, Toledo's only 2 hours away !! You will not be disappointed with the Dayton Airshow it's a yearly event that always seems to get better and better.

This year will not top last years show, but it looks like it will be a nice one to attend. Of course I'm 15 min away so I'm there regardless.

Well... we do love planes which is why we are going. I have made all of the arrangements - we are driving out on the 16th, attending the air show on the 17th, going to the Air Force museum on the 18th and driving home on the 19th. Somewhere in there I need to drive to Richmond, Indiana to pick up a plane that I bid on here at RCU. Since I have never been to the show, have two young children and hate lugging things like lawn chairs, I preordered pavilion seating tickets where we get our own table "near the flight line". I hope they are worth it. Thanks for the feedback.

Me and some friends decided to hit the Air Force Musuem and the XFC this weekend. First time at the museum Let me tell you, if you're in Dayton and don't goto to the museum, I pity you. It is amazing.

This is a pic of just 1 of 4 of the hangars.. yes that's a B-52.

Wow, that is some sight! You could fly R/C in there! My kids have never seen a B-52, I think it will be a lot of fun. Thanks for the pic - as I learn more, it seems as though 2 days is not going to be enough time but we will just have to fit it all in. I guess we could always come back again next year.

As a Dayton ex-patriate I fully endorse attendance of the air show and another full day for the AF museum.

Also, maybe make time for Young's Dairy.

You guys had to go and make me homesick...

Two days is definately not enough time! I live in farm country (yes there is some left in NJ) but I have never seen cows like that - Youngs looks like an interesting diversion. My in-laws have a farm in PA and I think this might give them some new ideas!!
