I think it has either, castor, kerosene, and diesel. What ratios? Anything else needed. Any experiences?
Thanks,

Check Clarence Lee's column in the latest RCM, or maybe e-mail him. He mentions brand name substitutes for prescription-only components (ether, some kind of nitro additive) along with proportions.

the mixture is ether + kerosene + castor oil + ignition improver(if available)
ether 30-35%
Kerosene 40-45%
castor oil 20-25%
ignition improver is amyl nitrate, isopropyl nitrate : add 2-3% in place of ether

for more info pls look at

I run my PAW 09 (Single Ball Bearing) on

2 parts Castor Oil (25%)
3 parts Lamp Oil (Ultrapure, Smokeless)
3 parts Ether (John Deere 80% Ether Starting Fluid)
2% Diesel Cetane Booster (Power Service Brand)
This is from Eric Clutton's website

Runs fine, but I start with an electric starter

I have a ST 90 waiting for a Davis Diesel Head (ordered)
According to Davis, less oil is ok for modern conversions

I'm planning on trying
2 parts Castor Oil (22%)
4 parts Lamp Oil
3 parts Ether
2% Diesel Cetane Booster

The glow version starts with one flip, hopefully the conversion will as well.

The PAW ran hot on this mixture

BTW this mix is virtually odorless except the sweetish ether smell

My favourite "all round" diesel mix:

3 parts castor oil (25%)
4 parts ether (33%)
5 parts kerosene (42%) (including 2% DII)

In the Kerosene component, include Diesel Ignition Improver [DII](cetane improver) at 2% of the total quantity (ie, 40% kerosene and 2% DII).

The best DII is Amyl Nitrate, then Iso-Propyl Nitrate. But due to problems obtaning these chemicals and high cost, most diesel fuel home brewers use a commercially available truck-stop automotive cetane improver (sold for use with pump diesel).

I have found that using less than 25% castor oil in R/C diesels is not good if you want long engine life and optimal cooling.

C/L Team Racers commonly use as little as 8%~10% castor in their engines, but longevity of engine life is not the primary consideration in that application.

The three equal parts of ether, oil and kerosene is a viable alternative although somewhat out of the dark ages. With modern engines the following mix is probably more suitable.

20% your favourite oil, 35% Ether, 45% Kerosene or Jet A.

This mix can be somewhat modified for your personal tastes. In my high quality diesels and diesel conversions, I use 15% oil and increase the kerosene percentage (the power producer) accordingly. If you lower the oil percentage this much, I'd recommend only castor or perhaps 2/3 castor 1/3 synthetic. Be aware that a diesel will not "die" if slightly lean or overcompressed, but continue to run "hard". This will put enormous stress on the bearings and piston /liner and castor oil would be my preference for peace of mind. If you're worried about oil on your plane, perhaps diesels are not for you!

Ether is going to be difficult to obtain. I believe it is a controlled substance in The States, as it is used in the production of illicit substances. I obtain mine from the chemist shop (drug store) and initially brought along jugs of premixed oil/kerosene to have the ether mixed in as the proprietor would not sell it to me directly.

The only other ingredient you might like to add is an ignition improver for operation at high speed, say above 10,000 rpm. Either amyl nitrate or amyl nitrite at 2 to 3% is enough here and higher quantities will not improve performance. You will also get funny looks from your local chemist when you try to buy this stuff. Along with being used as a drug by heart patients, it is also a muscle relaxant and used for recreational perposes by certain minority members of the community, believe me, you don't want to know why! In any case not much is required, less than 1/4 oz per gallon. Try the same method as for obtaining ether.

Happy mixing!
