A few days ago I went to the field to get in a few flights. One plane that I always have ready to go has a 600 ma pack that is less than 3 months old. I checked voltage and while it was not in the danger level I decided to put it on the field charger just to make sure. I use Hobbico's Field charger and had another pack on at the same time. I was expecting that at most it would take around 10 min to peak the pack out. While waiting for pack to charge I flew an electric that I keep just to play around with. After about 5 min flight I went to check on pack that was charging. It was still not completed so I cut off power, unpluged and put on volt meter to check status. Instead of being 5.0 or better it was down to around 4.2 volt. Opened plane to get to pack and the pack was so hot it melted shrink wrap and had the foam just about ready to flame.
I charged another pack on same circuit of charger to check it out and all went fine. Question is What caused this to happen. ME, Battery Pack, or Charger???

Difficult to tell from the sketchy info supplied. most probably one cell shorted out. When you stripped the wrappings off the pack after it cooled, was one cell dead and the others at about 1.2 volts or were all dead?

What probably happened is that the pack's voltage was too high and the charger thought there was an extra cell. That extra voltage probably fried the pack.

Is there any possibility you had your leads swapped? (- to +, + to -)

The Hobbico MKII will alarm if the leads are swapped. I don't know about the older model...... Just tried it and mine doesn't even come on.

Please read the whole thread

Im having the same problem. I started a thread in March about it (link above)

The charger does not overcharge based on cell count, it reads internal resistance.
I tested most aspects of this charger.

quote:

ORIGINAL: I did some tests last night.
I arranged 4 AA NiMih cells so I could move the charge probes between them.
This way I could change from 1 cell , 2cell , 3 cell and 4 cell.
This was done while charging was in progress.
The charger instantly changed to the proper voltage.

I also topped the pack off 4 times after full charge was achieved.
Every time it ran for another 10 mins. or so.
Then it terminated on its own, without heating up the pack.
The last time out of 4 the pack got warm not hot.
I also monitored voltage with a Fluke DMM.

The drop off happened so fast the you could not really see how low it went before the charger terminated.
I really need an analog meter to see it ( 1 that does not load the circuit).
The Fluke meter I have is damped on the read out.

Now tonight I will top the battery's off a couple more times.
After they are topped off I will try my 1st test again.
Moving my charge wires to change amount of cells.
This test will prove whether it see's more or less cells.
Fortunatly the charger allows you to change cells while charging.
You have about 2 second before it shuts down with error.
I also briefly hooked up a variable resistor and it tried to charge it based on resistance.
It tried for 4 seconds at a set voltage then terminated with error.

Thanks for all the feedback. This model charger will alarm if the leads are reversed. The charger is about three months old if even that old. Before I used an old (Really old) Ace quick charger that never gave a min trouble. After reading Geistware's reply I was ready to accept responsibilty for error. Now after reading the reply from AZVMAX I think I will direct my inquire to Hobbico's tech force (if they exist) Thanks to all this is what the hobby is all about. A bunch of guys standing around scratching their heads trying to solve a mystrey prolbem.
