rcairplane, I started with standard heavy piano wire embedded in the frame in front of the cockpit, but, it kept bending backward every time I would land, even good landings. So, I placed two thin hardwood sticks, epoxied on top of each other and ran them thru the fuse bottom structure where I had a couple hard points. Then I shaped two more pieces of wire to attach at the bottom of the strut and up to the hardwood sticks. I connected the two wire pieces together by wrapping clean stripped copper wire around about an inch of them and soldered the copper wire. Holds perfectly! Next, I took two small music wires and crossed them between the two gear struts attaching them the same way. This gives some spring, but, prevents the gear from spreading further outward on each landing.

Hope that helps. If thats not what you meant, just let me know. I am putting a close up photo here to see if that's what you meant.

Wing span: 1.5meters, powered w/ two OS25FX engines, and hope not to go over 2.5-2.8 Kg. 8 servos, w/ retracs and flaps in the inner wing.

I have been working for a year now, and still have a lot of work.
Its all hand made, including the plans.

Hi, this is my 46 - 50 2 stroke sized freestyle/3D design Stiletto. The first is actually quite an old pic: the canopy shown in the picture isn't the one that i actually used. Thes second pic was taken at the 2003 british freestyle championships. At that time the plane was only a couple of weeks old and i hadn't got round to setting it up properly... not a good idea when you're trying to take on the best in the country!!! More pics to follow after the weekend when i'm back in uni!

Once i'd sorted out the thrust line and other general setup issues it performed very well - quite easily does 3D. It harriers absolutely beautfully! Currently building a new version with different wing section, plug-in wings, bigger ailerons and slightly re-profiled fuselage to try and perfect the flight performance (and do better at 2005 freestyle event! ). I've used the one pictured to win two comps so far (both times beating 40% petrol powered beasts!) so i'm pretty chuffed with my first aerobatic design!

Here's something I think is a little different. I was inspired by the Northstar I built a couple of years ago,but this is completely new I think. 60" span!,twin elect. motors(MPJet 28/20-7 "outrunner"s),dual rudders inside the fins, extended tip fences with 6 deg. dihedral @ the tips, power pods with "ram-air" intakes for cooling, double stepped bottom fus. glassed & painted with Dupont "Centari" auto paint. The wing has, as you can see, all built-up ribs except for the 3 outer ribs. The airfoils I used are-RG-14&S7003,A full transition from RG14@the root to S7003@the tip-these are glider slope racing foils. the airframe as you see it weighs only 55.6oz.! The projected wt. ready to fly will be between-95&104ozs.for a wing loading of 8oz.sq.ft!!! The area of wing alone is 1860sq.in.! It also has a spring-loaded racing style keel juct ahead of the aft step for windy days at the lake and a spring-loaded water rudder in the center of T.E. The motors have been tested in-flight and will "hover" a 4# plane! ,so the predicted performance should be pretty good. the next one will have an 8" longer nose & solid foam ribs for the same wt.,but a lot less work. This is the 9th delta design I'v done--just gotta love those deltas! The red&wht. one is the DD600 named for it's wing area, weighs 23.2oz & is fully aerobatic - have flown in a space half the size of a football field or less!

My Plans Built Dan Santich Super Hots. I got the plans from DanSantichModels.com...there is even a loooong video available there of the late great Dan building a hots. Powered by an OS Max .60 with prather header and tuned pipe. Still waiting for maiden flight.

Howdy, how about a canard refill into this nice thread. Some of my own creations from left to right:
a)Twin Enya.40 push-pull canard with a "left-over" wing from a crashed CAP21. (Inspired from RCM Scat-twin.40 design)
b)Wing and foreplane from above were salvaged and went into #2 now fitted with twin piped OS45FSR engines, still in a cardboard fuse.
c)parked in snow two earlier ships, left one with a mid-mounted Rossi.45 and shaft drive to pusher prop, crashed on maiden flight.. ...Right one flied with pusher OS25FS engine for many years until "landed" in a treetop..
d)current project again with twin OS45FSR engines
.....Cheers/Harald

Oh my Harald! Twin 45's! Are we talking Mach 2 speeds here?

Do you find your canards to be very stable flyers?

My Starliner sure is. I have about 60 flights on it now and other than moving the main gear back 2" due to too little weight on the nose, it flies great! No stalls, 90 degree bank, full up elevator, and it just goes around in circles! At minimum speed the nose just bobs up and down.

Picture of my plane at post #152 for any one who would like to see it: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=2057716

Later!

Its to bad there are not more Canards at the flying field, its good to see some on the thread though. Both of those designs you guys have would do well in a magazine construction article. Here are 2 of my larger canards, the red plane on the left is a Bill Winter design from a AMA model aviation plan called the Ascender and the teal plane on the right is my own design called the Astro 2X it is loosely related to an estes aircraft.

Any more Canards out there?

Hi cwesh, well most of my canards have been stable but NOT the mid-Rossi plane which flew for about 20 seconds before...WHAMMM..! The reason I think is illustrated by your Starliner with its ample twin fins. Mine had to small fins being too close... ..
My twin Enya a)canard has a barely visible red subfin in the pic and flew nicely until I took it off....WHAMM..!
So I have learned the hard way that sufficient fin area is a VERY critical design factor. Ship b) on the table therefore has a large transparent subtwinfin not visible in the avatar but shown in the attached pic.
Pitch stability has so far been achieved by a combination of symmetrical main wing (at 0deg.) combined with a flat plate foreplane set at +2 or +3 deg. AoA. My experiments with decreased AoA of the foreplane resulted in the plane becoming divergent in pitch and a nightmare to fly.
Speed..? oh yes the avatar ship was rather fast with its piped engines but the current (yellow wing) plane has pneumatic retracts and a thinner main wing to get even more speed.

Howdy again, may I take the opportunity in this "scratch build environment" to have some input on my "LE droop" foreplane design intended for use on the yellow wing canard (post #232 above) before its maiden flight..?
Attach 4 pics illustrating the foreplane design. Got the idea from an article by Tom Hunt but have not seen any canard model using it and now I just wonder - waddayathink guys..??
Any input appreciated-have you experienced or seen anything like it being used before..? or please feel free to speculate if you will...THANKS....and Cheers.../Harald
