Is any one else self designed AND OR plans building any more or is it just me?
If so what aircraft, post pictures of your project.

Hope to flight test the Jungmeister this coming week. Only took 2 years from start of design till now. If tests turn out OK, I can proceed with the rest of the details.

This is my most recent scratch built project. It is an RCM plan called the "Wayfarer" from about 1971. I made many modifications to the design. First, I had the plans enlarged by 20% to give it a 60" Span. I squared up the tail feathers because I didn't care for the rounded shapes on the plans. I added ailerons to both wings rather than have ailerons on bottom wings only as the plans suggested. I also cowled in the engine as opposed to having it stick straight up in the wind. This being an old design, the wings were supposed to be rubber banded on but mine bolt on. The engine is a YS 91FZ. (Hope it will be enough). The fuselage is glassed and painted while the wings, stab, and rudder are covered with Ultracote. I just finished this project today, so can't comment on how she flies...................RS

Here are some pictures of my latest baby.
I call it Pegasus. It´s a motor-glider with 2.66 m wingspan and 2 channels (elevator - rudder).

F16A-15 composite fuse and vertical stab, Foam core wings, Electric Ducted Fan. 51.5" long, 6.7lbs, 90mm EDF unit, .9 KW power. Level flight speed ~90+ MPH, retracts and sequenced gear doors. This is proto type number 2. Completely molded and scratch built by me. Some details still missing on this one like the airbrakes and missile rails.

Dick, I decided on a 900x1200 format for the page, and compress each image to 300xheight to fit, then pasted each on the page.

vicman -> RE: Any scratch builders out there? Post pictures! (6/15/2004 2:05:18 AM)

No. But I do have the plans for his SR-71. I plan on building it in a year or so. Right now I am reserecting an old plan kitted by a local hobby shop owner who died a couple of years back. the plane was totally wrecked by a clubmate and I just couldn't stand to see it go away. I am fixing it for the memorial fly-in. After that I need to finish my Combat Models F-16. Then the SR-71, I may scratch an F-20 in there too.

GSNut -> RE: Any scratch builders out there? Post pictures! (6/15/2004 3:39:29 AM)

[:)]

Been Scratching for 55 years..with a few kits thrown in..Last kit bought was a Giant Scale P51D which is still in the box in my Kit Vault along with a Super Duellist 2/90

Normally work from good three views or just draw my own. I have a friend that draws his on his work bench and when done just belt sands the drawing away.. slices his own balsa wood also. Great Scale designer and builder, and does fly too!!

What's in the Scratch Hanger??
The youngest of these is the Skybolt and it's 15 years old.
1/3rd Steen Skybolt
1/3rd P-26 Peashooter (25 yrs in the building is up to painting now)
1/4th Super Cub (17 yrs old and flown more than I can remember)
Concept Fleet Bipe ( need to build a set of wings to replace the orginials)

Here's whats getting all my attention now and it's needing the details finished..

A 1/3rd Scale Pitts S2-a with a 71.5 in. top wing, 68.5 in. lower wing dry weight is 18 lbs. .....NO NOT A GP !!

Built for altitude at Mile High and is powered with a Zenogh G-62 swings a wideblade 22 X 10 and is equipped with a Toni Clark Sideby muffler and a carb venturi of 2 in. Tach reads a dependable 6750 top with a steady 975 idle on the ground.

Lawrenceljh -> RE: Any scratch builders out there? Post pictures! (6/15/2004 4:12:51 AM)

Vicman.....
I started a SR-71 back in 90 (what a bird) I was at Edwards when she rolled out for it first flight, well after the A-11 and YF-12. Very unstable with ducted fans. But a beauty just the same. The necells are close to that of a coke bottel. One of these days I may return to it. It's good hearing someone else is going for it. That baby had my dreams wrapped up in it back in the 60's.

Good luck

Larry

Hi, Lawrenceljh

I started a set of XB 70 plans on auto cad, it could be a prop jet, DF or turbine
It has a 52.5" wing span

vicman -> RE: Any scratch builders out there? Post pictures! (6/15/2004 12:36:46 PM)

For you Lawrence. Its not mine but it is the same plan I have. I plan on mounting an MVVS .45 and hurtin the sky one day.[8D]

William Robison -> RE: Any scratch builders out there? Post pictures! (6/15/2004 3:03:30 PM)

Well...

I see a lot of beautiful planes here. Doug, your Pitts is the champ. If it weren't for the large screws in the cockpit view I'd suspect the pictures weren't really a model. It's that good.

But I also see a lot that aren't scratch built.

Ways to get a flying model:

1) RTF. Assembled, go fly.
2) ARF. Already built, you assemble the larger components, go fly.

These first two are relative no-brainers, minimum skills and no building required.

3) Build a purchased kit. Structural components in the box, gather the miscellaneous bits, build, and fly.
4) Build from plans. Gather the structural components and the miscellaneous bits, build, and fly.

These two require much higher skills than a RTF or ARF, but the brain work is already done. There's no real difference between kit and plan built except the convenience of the kits on one hand, and the greater variety available when building from plans on the other.

5) Build from scratch. You decide what to build, how to build it, and what to build it from. Anything less is not scratch building.

So, plan builders, I'm sorry, but that plane is not scratch built.

Bill.

vicman -> RE: Any scratch builders out there? Post pictures! (6/15/2004 3:26:06 PM)

Bill, did you really want to put a negative spin on this thread[sm=tired.gif]? I thought this subject was completely milked a few moths ago, remember the poll and everything? Most agreed when a cake is made from scratch a recipe is used, if you cut your wood and use a plan it's made from scratch.

Too bad you couldn't enjoy the pictures of other peoples work without degrading and detracting it somehow[sm=thumbdown.gif].

I don't care about your reply... I am just going back to build another plane that can't be bought in kit form from a hobby shop.
