Yeah i've always been told to just set up the engine to run, and fly it. Make sure there is a nice trail of smoke when its running. Also be carefull not to overheat the thing, and lastly, on my 110 and 140 I aim to be just a shade under or at 9000.

the ys engines run really well right out of the box. just put a tank through it to be sure, another to set it up and once it is tuned for the first time, it will run just as well as it ever will. all you will ever need to do is adjust the high end from time to time.

Thanks Robert, I still have some mods to do on the UCD in preparation of this and I just want to get a head start on the bench. So far I've been getting a lot of great advice from guys that are now becomeing regular visitors here. I'll take it a step at a time and keep soaking up the info from everyone. Thanks all. Joe

No probs. By all means run it on the bench by the way. I check high end idle and transition on the bench, but I rarely (infact never) had to check the last two!

please let us know how you get on with that engine, my YS.63 is the best engine I've ever owned.
right with the YS1.40 /1.60 dingo's do you have to run a tuned pipe on them, or can you just use a standard silencer.

Four strokes don't use tuned pipes I think, its just two strokes. Four strokes have pipes (not tuned) in F3A to keep the noise down, but I have seen a few pitts style YS mufflers. I think that www.westonuk.co.uk do some.
The 140L is by far the best YS engine I have had. I was told just to turn the needle 1.5 times and fly it. I did that, and never, ever had to tuch the needles. Idle was perfect, transition perfect, everything perfect.

Foof, we're thinking on the same lines. I will have to check access on the model for a tuned pipe. Never used one, but would be very interested. How is the 140 on fuel consumption. Some guy was telling me that it really sucks it up. Joe

Foof, yes, you can see it in the pics. Also came with the check valve. No wrenches or guage for the rockers though.

Robert, What is that YS haulin around the bog? Got any pics of the plane? Joe

Hercmate---DON'T TOUCH A THING!!!! That setup is perfect for getting a feel for this engine. I started with an APC 16x4W on my OMP Yak. Lots of smoke, 9200-9300rpm. I'm now trying a Zinger 15x8, may be a little too fast. Ordered an APC 15x6, might be the best compromise between thrust and air velocity over the tail feathers.

cumn thru---Everything I've read says not to break in a YS on the ground. The most convincing is Dave Shadel, the moderator for the YS Engine Manufacturer Support Forum. He says to just fly it, start rich, then gradually lean it out after a few flights. Don't do it the same as a Saito, meaning so rich that you burn 10oz. of fuel in 2 minutes. Just make sure you have lots of smoke at full throttle and transition, and a slight amount at idle.

A couple YS questions:

What is the preferred fuel to use with a YS(IE nitro content and lube %)? I've been using Byron 16% castor/synth. blend(15%nitro) in my Saito with good results. Good or bad fuel for a YS?

I assume that the YS will run fine in any position due to the regulator, and that there would be no fuel siphoning issues if the engine is not running. Correct?

Are there any special requirements for the fueling system as far as the tank/lines go?

At which size would engine vibration become a big issue, necessitating the need for a soft mount?

Thanks.

use an engine mount for any size, doesn't hurt the plane. But I would definately use one for the 140's+
I use 18%klotz 20nitro, though most people use 20% oil, don't use castor with them, it will destroy the engine.

The engine will run perfectly in any position. Just remember to bleed off the tank pressure after each flight. For the fuel system, you will need a check-valve, which is included with the engine. You will also need two fuel-safe T's. Look on www.centralhobbies.com for the Tettra Aluminum T's, I ended up replacing the plastic T's about every 3 months. Also, at least two good filters are a must. Use aluminum wherever you can. For fuel, I run Powermaster 20/20. 20% nitro and 20% synthetic oil. More nitro = more power, but with more fuel consumption. Lots of guys use 30% heli fuel, though I'm not sure which brand. Foofydoo's right, no castor allowed! Also, don't use after-run oil, unless it says on the bottle that it is YS safe. Just run the engine out of fuel after every flying day, you'll be fine.

Basically its the same as with my old regulator set up I was running. Good tip on the after run oil. The only thing left to swap out are the plastic tee's. The heli fuel says that it is 100% synthetic. Joe

holy cow! This thing seems more and more high maintenance!!

Only part I dont like is the 30% fuel req. That stuff can break the bank every weekend!! I guess you have to pay to play

I have my 140 Dingo running w/ a Slimline Pitts muffler. On 30% heli fuel, it turns APC 18x8W @ 8700 rpm. It will do 9400 rpm on APC 15x13N, but it was a curiousity tach during break-in. I would keep rpm in the mid 8k's as recommended. The 140 Dingo is my first YS 4-stroke since my 45 2-stroke I had from 12 years ago. The DZ is much easier to tune than all the Saito I've owned. I am not sure about the pressurized ones, as I had problem tuning the 45 2-stroke back when I was young, but this injection design is great.

Matt, They run great on 20% synthetic. I have this gallon of heli from the Saito. They do say to stick to the fuel that you break it in on though. Thats a big one right now for me. My LHS is so lame, never anything aside from what he usually sells. Thats why our field may as well be sponsered by Tower and Horizon. Who, BTW, are now going to carry YS Engines. Out of stock till July. As far as bleeding the pressure off when done with a flight, thats the norm for any pressurized system. Joe

Gents... ...

Following with great interest ....Clam is giving me a cerebral hemorrhage ...but without wishing to be pedantic ...would some one just answer " Yay " or " Nay " to the following sub basic questions :-

(1) Is the tank is pressureised by the return from the regulator/pump ?

(2) The regulator/pump is supplied with fuel under this pressure ?

(3) The regulator/pump then supplies fuel to the engine at a pressure greater than the pressure that is in the plennum chamber

That will do for now this could be a long night ..
