Richard, from what you are describing it sounds like you need to let the plane build a little more speed. You described a tip stall during the last flight. The flight before the plane sounded like the controls were "mushy", again possibly from not enoughs speed. What the other owners are saying may support this as the wing loading may be high enough to where you simply need to build more speed or look for a lighter set of floats.

Looking at your photos of it in the pool, it seems to have too much wing incedence.. (the wing is at too much angle of attack)... In relation to how it is sitting on the floats.. You can lessen this by putting a 1/4-1/2" block between the rear mounting strut and the fuse... You only want about 1-2 deg. and in the photo it seems more than that..
Sounds like this model is not the best to learn float flying on. A trainer would be the best, but if you want something scale then a Cub on floats is your best bet... Don't give up though, once you get better plane, flying off water is alot of fun...

What is the wing span of this plane. I have an old Hanger 9 182 40 size on floats and it flies great. I have it over powered with a saito 91 and have to keep the air speed up or it will stall, have also drooped the ailrons alittle which helped with being able to slow the plane down alittle more be fore stalling.

The CMP Cessna 182 has a 63 inch wingspan and weighs about 5-6 lbs. It has a wing area in the 497 sq in range I think. Most of us have a 46 to 50 for power.
How does it compare to the Hangar 9 182? I'm going to try mine on wheels first to see how it flys, then maybe put the floats on.

Flew my CMP Cessna 182 the other day and all I can say is WOW. It really flys great. I have the OS 46 FX on the nose and it will take off with only1/2 throttle.. I can fly it with 1/4 throttle fine. I believe a good 25 would fly it off the grass runway we have.. It really flys like the fullsize ones I have flown. Very good stall entry and recovery. As a matter of fact I had the elevator clevis come off the the elevator control horn on the 3 rd flight and lost complete elevator control. Balanced where it was I could continue flight and even landed it, and replaced the clevis on the control horn and flew again. (see my story on the R/C Humor threads). I think this plane would make a great little float plane. Not a beginers plane but a really scale looking and flying one. I need to get busy on the float rigging.

Hi

I was going to say get a cub but its a bit late, My restored cessna 182 which looked similar sort of size to yours lasted about 1/2 a circuit not really sure why it crashed was still trimming it when it dropped into a dive and wouldn't come out. I did fly it several times when the previous owner had it before he crashed it and gave me the pieces. Mine was already heavy and i don't think would have coped with floats as well. Hope yours lasts longer.

I flew a cub of water for many years before it crashed due to some sort of radio failure. I now have another which is under restoration.

Hi Guys,

Just checking in, I have just about everything I need to get mine built, this is going to be a "Floats only version"

Been busy with work and the World Tiger Moth Tour...I hope to start my CMP Cessna this week....

Since starting this project, I've been skeptical that this plane would fly on floats, from what I've read no one has successfully got this plane to fly off water until now...

Check this out guys,

Flight # 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKtWv3TujcM

Flight # 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVN6Noa1dHc&mode=related&search

Flight # 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlQoZBcKUTQ&mode=related&search

She looks like she has some scary tendencies but for now I have a renewed hope to make mine a successful float plane...

How are you guys making out ???

Sam

The problems in the second and third videos seem to be related to a miss-aligned float. The right float is tweeked up at the front and as soon as the airplane gets up on the step, the left float digs in and the airplane swerves. The crash looked like the pilot was holding right rudder to compensate for the left swerve and stalled it when it broke free of the water.

I wouldn't blame that on the airplane.

Interesting to see how well it handles on the water with no water rudder.

Jim

I Agree...he seems to really fly it hard....the pitching to the left on takeoff could also be caused by torque from the prop and engine...

I think water rudders would help also for keeping it online while taxiing and getting up on step...

Did you notice he wasn't using any wing struts ???

Looks like they just need a little help on set up and water taxi. They got it in the air the first couple times by shear luck looks like to me. Get the plane on step and then take off. Mine flys so good as a wheel plane I just have to get the float set up ready. I think I'll use a firewall mount ont he front strut and the Gear mount on the rear strut with cross bracing between them. any flexing of the mount just agrivates the situtation. I've had bad step up give me fits until i got it just right for the aircraft I had floats on. The rules of thumb are just that a starting point, tweeking the floats setup just make it easier to fly off water.

Heheh. I know the Cessna 182 from CMP can be a horror to handle. But keep trying. With every hard-to-handle model comes a great deal of training.
And I don't know what I should've done without handling my earlier tyrannosaurus-pitbull-great-white-shark-handle models...

The CMP Cessna 182 is as nice as the original full size one! BUT! A cessna is a full size aircraft made for training purposes.
Just think of what a flying LEGO brick like the original cessna 182 would fly like with a 250hp engine on a 10m span aircraft.. HAH! IT WOULD RIP'ER TO PIECES! and the gentle-airfoiled
wings would not know if they should fly or stall due to the extreme airflow.

My Cessna 182 has an ASP .61 4-stroke in it... I's overkill during takeoff and it flips if you blink half of your eye. Rudder control is the solution, and even if it banks a bit, just corrigate
with the rudder, to keep both winghalves flying somewhat together. Once in the air it flyes really nice and scale like on 1/2 - 2/3 throttle. Anything over 2/3 and it gets ugly.

The first picture illustrates my Cessna going into a flip during take-off. The other illustrates the nice flying-sheep it is when flown right during landing.

Hi guys,
Attached is my CMP Cessna back in 2005.. It was a wonderful plane to fly, but way to much overpowered with Saito 80!!! I crashed it a few months later, while trying to glide on a dead stick!! Wrong judgement landed the plane on land!! He he... Anyway, I sold that plane for USD10 to a friend who were willing to fix it.. I kept the floats though and finally got it fixed a few weeks ago... A brand new CMP Cessna are on the way, still in the box waiting for a power plant!! Planning to put in a TT 46 with slimline pitts... Will update on the progress and can't wait to get back to float flying!!!
