The dipping up and down (porpoising) is caused by it being to tail heavy. If your CG is in the right location add some nose weight and it should straighten out. They will fly straight, fast, and FUN

I would like to know more about your 18X18 PBF.
Is it 2m or 4m , what size servos. I haven't flown anything smaller than 24X24 but I'll bet it is fun.

Able, there is tons of info in this therd and lots of pictures it is worth reading....c.g. is 5 1/2 inches behind leading edge... a 25 is perfect for the 24x24 size. good luck

A little advice, make the gear wires a little longer than normal. After the tail touches down, the nose drops down hard. so the extra length helps. LG sure makes it easier on props. Extra weight doesnt seem to hurt. My 25FP still hovers on 1/2 throttle.

Can somebody post some good close up photos of how you put on the landing gear.

I would like to go w/ landing gear to keep from breaking so many props.

today i broke 3props on three flights. thats $7.50 other than the motor, and radio, thats more than i got in the entire pizzabox. I had my prop set to where I thought they wouldn't break. Not counting when i hit the tree. I can see how this thing could get real expensive if I keep breaking props every flight.

Right now my CG is at 5.75" so adding a little weight up front w/ some landing gear would help it out.

I believe it is 3m. This stuff comes of the top of the pallets of aluminium sheeting we get at work. I used hs81's and a hs55 for throttle. The battery is a 150mah with a 2oz fuel tank. I made the elevons 2 1/2", and on my next one I think I'm going to go up to 3". I smashed this one Sunday after a control horn came off of a elevon. It would still putt-putt around in a circle and hovered for a bit. Until it fell out of a 8ft. hover on its back. The one elevon wouldn't roll it over fast enough.

I don't think coathanger wire can take a joke. I use 1/8 piano wire bent into U shape and screwed to ply motor mt with nylon gear straps. From ply to wheel hub is 8 ins.If I ever get this @#$% digital camera to work on the web I'll send a picture.

I used standard airplane wire landing gear. The ones that have the bend at the top and use plastic clips to hold them into the balsa.
I saved a set with the mount from a now deceased tree dodger. LOL

This gear works good for me.

As you can see in the picture I cut the corners off, I measured over 2" from the edge and cut at a 45 deg. angle.

I took a 36" length of 1/8" music wire and ran it all the way thru the leading edge. Then bent it down 90 deg. and out to mount the wheels on. It is 5 1/4" from the leading edge to the axle center. I used Dubro 2 1/4" mini lite wheels.
The braces are 3/32 music wire, they slide in twelve holes back from the leading edge. They go into the coro abuot 4" then are bent and silver soldered to the main leg.

I have 2 1/2" clearance with a 9" prop.

I should have made the first bend right against the coro this would have given me another 1 1/2" prop clearance.

I haven't broken a prop yet, but have had it touch the ground and kill the engine.

The plane has hit the ground hard enough to bury the engine up to the leading edge with no damage to the gear.

I saw the pics and got the email. I think where I went wrong was I wanted to keep the control rods short and mounted the elevon servos too far back. I will re-design my PBF and go ahead and take the time to make wood/dowel extensions. I wanted to be quick about it and I used just straight metal wire, hence wanting to keep the lengths short.

My PBF seemed to be way too tail heavy and adding weight to an already motor-ladened square piece-o-plastic seemed not the way to go. My pics are still viewable under this thread on Page 8 - Posts 141 and 142.

Nice PBF's guys!

What are yours ending up for weight?

Mine is at 2 lbs 12 oz total with mt tank.

I used Bluecor foam instead of Coroplast.

I have five servos full size (ailerons, elevator, rudder & throttle).
500ma battery

.40 OS Max FP

Have not flown it yet. Need to wait for snow storm to end. (too windy) LOL

Great minds think alike. I tried mine that way first and it just fell over on its nose, to much drag, needs a set of skins.

Flypaper,
its been windy here,i can hold my pbf in the wind at the same attitude as the picture on the table. Thought i would just "set it down" like that on the field. we will see tomorrow. If not will more than likley remove the wire. we have nice tall grass to drop in. only break props when i get "crazy" at low altitude.

Toywizard,
can you post a picture of your foam pbf? sounds interesting. would like to here how it performs. Dont have a clue on my flying weight.OS 25 hovers it at half throttel...guess its ok
