James, I had accidentally addressed my earlier reply to "Dave" instead of you. John is correct on the foam board, It's 18" square and weighs about 2oz (if I remember right) without the motor, battery or radio gear. Flies much easier than the glow versions as long as it's calm and doesn't miss the rudder too much since it doesn't have the power for sustained hovering. Also keeps me from getting into inverted flat spins at inopportune times

I thought you might like to see my PBF. I've only got 5 or 6 flights on it, so we are still getting used to eachother! I flew it last weekend and someone said it looked like a flying carpet so I had to have a geenie. The new vertical was the closest thing I had. I haven't flown it like that yet but it flew great with the standard one.

BenJammin,

That box really has class. I tried to design a genie for my Stamp, but it looked like anything but a genie. I like yours better, but I don’t know if my wife will. You will have to be careful while flying this plane with other pilots in the air because they will crash their planes while trying to watch yours go by. (grin) Keep up the good work.

Ben Jammin, 6 flights on her and you still have that APC prop?? The first day I test flew mine, I had three flights and three broken APC Props

I now use MA props and they last much longer.

Hi all,
after having great success with a foam board mini electric pizza box, I built one out of an actual Big New Yorker box. It's the lid from the box which measures 17x16 1/2 and is set up the same as my foam version with GWS gear and motor. This cardboard one is almost 1.5oz heavier than the foam version and is pretty under powered but it will fly, loop and roll with a little energy management.

I just got mine done and first flight in today. I love this thing! As I had my dad hand launch it at full throttle, I found that they are VERY touchy! I did get it to hover twice, and I have never hovered anything before! I flew it a while, and then it flipped and died. Just broke the prop, though! I have a Thunder Tiger GP .42 on it, with Airtronics gear. 10x 6 Master Airscrew nylon prop. I'll fly it again soon and report sum-more.

YLF,
Your electric Big New Yorker looks really neat!

I've got an IFO, but other than that, I don't know anything about electric planes. Maybe you can help me out here. Is your motor/prop the same as the one used on the IFO? If so, I may have to convert the IFO into a honest to goodness Flying Pizza Box like yours.

I can vouch for Ylf, it looks pretty cool. We flew it around a large gymn for a little while. We got a few looks from a college girls dance team

Yeah, I can see you want alot of props with these. The 11x4 APC I have on there now must be extra tough. I have flat spun it in twice with that prop and no damage. My first death spiral was the end of my only 10x4 MAS. Is there any secret to saving them from a flat spin? Or do you just sit back and enjoy the show?

I took her to the combat meet with me yesterday. I didn't have to use it for combat but I flew it before the meet started. Got alot of laughs!

I flew my pbf today for the first time, it didn't fly long! i had my elevator control reversed! I then realized my aileron control was correct. All my attempts to correct only reversed the problem (elevator was corrected and then the aileron would be reversed)
what do I do?? can anyone help? I'm using an Airtronics rd6000 and standard servos. I tried reversing from the radio and the servo arms, one control would be right and one wrong....

Thanks for any help!

Ryan,
I had the same situation and luckily all it takes to fix it is swapping the channels that the two servos are plugged into on the receiver. Then you can get everything right using the reversers in the Tx, then have fun.

Well this weekend was the first weekend I have spent flying my PBF. I am sorry I can't give such raving reviews of my flights though.

I think after reading EVERY message in this thread that it is the way I have been flying it. I have not been trying to keep the nose up and go slow. I do fly at about 1/4 to most at 1/2 throttle, but I fly flat. I also had some engine tuning issues to deal with and I was MAJOR tail heavy starting out.

The picture you see below is with 1 oz of weight added to the tail end about 1 inch from the end. I am using a OS 46SF, cheapy $10 Hobbico servos 600mAh batt pack and JR R700 RCVR. In the pic I was not using rudder, but the servo is mounted.

At this point the CG is at 5", but I have a feeling from reading here that experience has led to moving that back to 6" or more?

And lastly, how can I keep my servos from moving around. I didn't have much noticeable problems due to the servos moving for the first 10-15 flights (6-8 props...which #'s are we going by?), but by then the tie wraps were starting to make the coroplast holes a little bigger.

All in all I probably put in alot more flight (and props) compared to some of the other beginners, literally I put in about 25 flights this weekend and I still have 4 of the 15 MAS 10x6 props I bought. I also went through 2 maple, uhh?? Sticks? Fuselage? Spine?

I am now going through a total rebuild now and would like some suggestions or comment on my design or lack of it? Have fun guys! I haven't given up on 'em just gotta learn more about piloting them!

Well due to my lack of piloting skill in RC aircraft AND in PBF flying I was not able to WOW anyone at the field here in Dallas, Texas. There were several eyebrows that were raised when the realized I was trying to fly the darn thing and not "just making an elaborate break in pad for my engine" (as one spectator put it).

So many were surprised that it actually flew and because it never flew for very long and I was not able to hover it or do some torque rolls I got alot of advice on how it needed an AIRFOIL! BLAH! Is that a four letter word by the way? It's a flat winged plane for crying out loud.

Anyways, I will try some more to get the plane balanced and in good running order and then practice on doing stunts. I have only been in the hobby for about 8 mos and I probably have about 4 mos of actual flying time in.

So here's to a cheap alternative to flying while I find the time to fix my 'other' plane. Geez crashes with PBF are no problem, not to mention entertaining. HEY! come to think of it the crowd did WOW when I did an inverted flat spin for about 15 seconds before it hit the ground with NO DAMAGE. Plugged the glow plug on and started her up! GOTTA LOVE IT!

PachucoBro, You might move your engine out in front more to fix the CG problem, you can cut holes and mount your servo's down in the plastic and they won't move at all. My engine mount is 4 inches long and it's about 5 inches to the back of the prop from the front of the plane. If you want to fly the plane flat or faster you might stick a piece of 3/32 8" long music wire in the front channel in the center and jam a strip of wood in to lock it in place then put a 1/4 x 1/2 aluminum channel on each side of the engine mount out to the tip and put popsicle sticks as shims under the lip at the bottom and attach with sheet metal screws through the channel to lock in place. If you add the removable tips it will fly a lot easier until you get the hang of it. Jeff

PachucoBro,
Sorry to hear that your PBF experience hasn't been much fun. To make your PBF much more enjoyable, I'd suggest making the following changes:

1.) Mount your servos with both double-stick foam tape and zip-ties. The foam tape will keep the servos from moving, and the zip-ties will make sure the servos stay stuck to the foam tape.

2.) Assuming you're using a 24"x24" wing (including elevons), set your CG to 5.5" back from the leading edge. This will make it easier to maintain the required nose up flying attitude.

3.) Go ahead and setup your rudder control. The PBF is much more enjoyable to fly, and much easier to hover and slow-fly with the rudder.

4.) Slow down! If your PBF is flying flat with a 46 at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle on a 10x6 prop, then your PBF is flying WAY too fast!!! Instead try flying your PBF by using the elevator control to maintain a nose up angle of about 30 degrees or higher, while using the throttle to control your altitude.

5.) Use a 10x4 prop instead of a 10x6. The 10x4 will allow you to control the engine thrust much more accurately, because changes in the engine RPM produce less change in prop thrust.

6.) Replace your OS 46SF with a much lighter engine. The OS 46SF is a great engine, but it weighs nearly 16 ounces with the stock muffler and is simply too heavy for a 24x24 PBF.

Using a ball bearing 25 to 32, or a bushing 40 will save you 4 to 5 ounces of dead weight, and using a Norvel bushing 25 will save you 8 ounces of dead engine weight. Using a lighter weight engine will give you a lighter PBF, which will make it easier to fly. Replacing the stock muffler with a mousse can pipe (MCP) will reduce the weight even further while adding a considerable power increase.

My personal favorite engines for the PBF are the OS 40FP w/MCP and 10x4 prop, the TT 42GP w/MCP and 10x4 prop, and the Norvel Big Mig 25 and 9x4 prop.

7.) If you haven't seen them yet, I'd highly recommend watching the videos that Mud Duck posted of my PBFs inflight. This will help explain the nose up attitude of the PBF when it's flying. The link to the videos are at the bottom of my PBF web page.

Hehe I built one today and I forgot to check the CG after I put in the tail linkage... so it made a hard crash kinda... I used some other stuff to make it, that foam core poster board. I am going to get some corigated-plastic and do it that way, and put some Vanilla Coke logos on it...

Hey guys I can not get the videos on the JCRC site to play, I have tried just about everything imaginable to no avail. I keep getting an error telling me that an appropriate decompressor cannot be downloaded. I have tried on two computers with different OS's (95&98). Is there anything else I can try?

TIA
Woodman

BTW I flew my PBF yesterday, man it is amazing what a two dollar
piece of plastic can do!

You probably need quicktime if it's .mov, WMP can get the sound but not the video of .mov files.
