Hey Dave would that be Media 7.1 or the new Beta version 9? I have version 7.1 and it does not work.

Thanks,

After I upgraded to Media Player version 7.01, I was finally able to see the video. Before that, it was audio only.

I just downloaded and installed Media Player series 9.00 beta. I then went to the www.jcrc.com web site and downloaded the unsuccessful "windsock touch & go " to test it, and it played just fine.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about video files and players. The PBF videos were recorded by my buddy Shaun "Mud Duck" Zimmerman, and are hosted from his own RC club's web site at www.jcrc.com. I believe the videos are ".avi" files.

Shaun makes his living as a professional computer guru, so maybe he might be able to give us some insight as to why the videos will play on some PCs, but not on others. Can you help us out here Mud Duck?

Hi Dave and Foamguy,
I think you have a cult following now. I want to make two PBF's! I have an OS32SX w/Mac's pipe and 11x4APC for a 24" PBF, and a few mini servos for it. I've been able to torque roll a Pizzaz and a Diablotin XL so far, but this thing looks even easier to TR and cruise around at high Alpha angles. I also have a nice Poulan 46cc engine converted for giant scale. The engine is 3.5lbs with the battery ignition. With a 20x10 prop it has about 18lbs of thrust. (It will hover and lift the 14.5lb Diablotin XL from a TR but marginally). What size PBF would be good for this motor? I was thinking 48" square, which would give 2304sq in. At 8lbs total weight it should be a hoot at 8 oz/sq ft wing loading. I was thinking of 1" extruded foam with 1" alum C-channel or spruce leading and trailing edges for spanwise strength.

Tom, I've been flying my .40 size PBF for a little over a month and a half and I went through at least a dozen 10 x 4 soft plastic props. You'd gonna need a second mortgage to keep props on that big gasser. Good luck!

I had an OS46FX on a 48x48 PBF. It flew well in calm conditions. When any wind came up the thing was uncontrollable. Even with 5/32 piano wire fore and aft edges it wanted to flex and twist. I had landing gear on it and every take off in even a light wind it would lift off and do a barrel roll and crash. As I said it was a lot of fun when calm. Here in N/W Wash. state in the foot hills of the Cascades we don't get to many good calm days. I disassembled the thing. I have a hoot with my 24/24 PBF. It's my favorite toy.

I found my source of Corplast... The neighbor accross the street puts up Real Estate signs. I asked if he had any old stuff. Boy did he! A LARGE company was bought, and he has a stack about 2 feet thick of appro 4x5 ft sheets from the old company. All 4 mil, and same on top as bottom, but who cares..

Now to find an engine and servos....

Hi Tom !

Glad you are having so much fun with it ! Honestly, most of ya'll here have far more experience with it/them than I do. I haven't had much time to mess with them since spring and probably won't till Nov. or so. Hopefully ya'll have them perfected so I can just hop right back in and build the "perfect " PBF.

Tom,
Just thinking out loud here, but that Poulan 46cc is about 7 times larger than a 6.5cc OS 40FP. The 3.5 lbs. Poulan weighs about 5 times more than an 11 ounce OS 40FP. I'm guessing that a Poulan 46cc would be rated at about 4hp, which is 4 times greater than the 1hp OS 40FP.

A 24x24 PBF powered by an OS 40FP is really overpowered.....but the reserve power is nice for hard maneuvering. I haven't tried it, but I would think that an OS 40FP could easily fly a 36x36 PBF.

The 4 times more powerful Poulan 46cc should be able to fly 4 times more wing area. Your 48x48 PBF has 4 times the wing area of the 24x24 PBF, so I would consider this to be in the ballpark, but I would also consider this to be as small as you would want to go. Based on a 40FP powered 36x36 PBF, 4 times the wing area would give you a 72x72 Poulan 46cc powered PBF, and I would consider this to be the upper size limit.

Splitting the difference gives a 60x60 PBF, which I think would probably be where I would begin with a PBF powered by a Poulan 46cc engine.

Does this make sense?

(hey, wouldn't an 80x80 PBF be IMAA legal?)

Hi Dave and Foamguy,
That does make sense Dave. I HAVE thought about making it the IMAA legal 80"! What a hoot that would be! I agree the 48" PBF would be a little small for the Poulan 46. I don't know if I can fit a 60" PBF in my car though. I would have to strap it to the roof to get it to the field. I got my Coroplast today. I went to a sign supply shop with my buddy stevezero and got a 4x8 sheet of blemished 4mm yellow for $5. I made a 26x26 PBF with 1/4x1/2 alum channel leading edge... I like to go fast as well as sub-stall 3D flying. I mounted 1/8 wire gears at the tips with 8" total height, and a steerable tailwheel. Added some 2" tall fences at the tips, sorta "training wheels" for this thing. It's got about 100 sq in more than a 24 x 24 PBF because from what you've said, an OS32SX w/Macs pipe and 11x3 APC will be almost overpowering a 24"x24" so I went a little larger. I'll post some pics when I can borrow a digital camera. The OS32 needs new bearings so I ordered them today from Bocabearings.com. I'm up to 1.5lbs for the airframe w/landing gear and motor mount. The engine is 12.5oz with the Mac's pipe, and with my radio gear (mini servos and GWS micro receiver and 700mah Nimh batt) it should be about 2.75lbs dry. It shouldn't be too much longer before I commit aviation with this thing. Hey, how about a 15'x15' full-scale ultralight PBF with 40hp Rotax on it? -Tom

I am a new guy to the hobby. I've gotten fairly proficient with a trainer nad have a couple of construction projects underway. However, I am intrigued by the PBF. Here are some questions that come to mind:

1. Is a PBF too much to handle for a novice???

2. I have a new OS46LA and a standard size flight pack which is destined for a new plane over the winter. Seems many of the PBF's us the old OS40FP which is now discontinued. The OS46LA is basically same weight with a little more power. Any reason why I couldn't use it with a standard muffler??? (I can always adjust radio and/or linkage to prevent use of full throttle if need be.)

So I got to thinking... could I use the OS46LA on a PBF???

3. My Hitec radio flight pack has a standard size (600 mah) battery pack. Do I need to buy a smaller one? If so, do I need to get a different charger for the smaller battery pack??

Thanks in advance!!!

A buddy at the field build one of these and i got to fly it last weekend. What a trip! Loops in its own length. Rolls like a cork screw. SPINS all the way to the ground if you don't watch out.

Great fun fly

Hi Tim

The PBF is an easy plane to fly if you remember to always keep the nose high. The plane has no airfoil so you are not generating any lift to speak of as it moves through the air. When its launched keep some up elevator dialed in and it flys right out of your hands.

A 40 -46 engine is more that enough with the stock muffler. The one i flew had a 25 on it.

BAttery is ok.

The plane is strong and not prone to break during a mild crash.

Best way to land it is to slow down and dial it full up elevator while keeping the nose at about 25 degs. Use the throttle to just float it down.
