man tell me more about this Ryobi 31 cc engine...
They are going for like 60 bucks, converted on Ebay, sounds like a steal, but I dunno how much of a headache/perfomance sacrifice you will haev to go through.

But I do know the advantages of gas:

- Burns Cleaner, no more dirty flightly oily crud to clean of the plane, or at least not nearly as much
- CHEAPO FUEL! 2.13/gallon regular plus some generic oil.
- More effcient than nitro
- Some say the perform better (debatable I guess)

The rest I don't know, they seem great, so why aren't all big scales using gas?

What do you mean, most all the BIG SCALE PLANES are GASOLINE! They work great, but on magneto, it may make the plane heavier than it needs to be. You might end up adding tail weight to an already tail-heavy model. Convert to electronic (no heavy flywheel) and you might have a better candidate for the Zero.

'Dragon' action figure pilot released 2 years ago, pretty rare nowadays. Stands a foot tall, but undersized for the GSP Zero!

Great picture ARF`er !!
I love the weathering you have done to yours!
Do you have any more pictures of the rest of the plane ?

If any one is interested, Hobby Lobby has Jap bust that should be the right size.

Now, Im back to buisness
Got the engine installed into the Zero again after it was borrowed by my Yak-54

I have tried to weather the plane, and I think it turned out well. It looks better in real life than in the pics

Anyone flown theirs yet, and found the optimal CG ?

Perfect. I have a YS 120 NC on my Zero. YS 140 will pull it even better. You should get yourself the Graupner 16x8 3-blade prop and a scale 3-blade spinner.

Hi All,

I have just purchased one of these and am having difficulty deciding on a proper engine. This is by far the largest plane in my small but ever growing hanger. I'm also on sort of on a budget with regard to my hobby purchases, so I need to keep that in mind when aquiring all the other components I will need to make this thing airworthy. So far it looks like the kit itself will be the cheapest item, since the engine, retracts, and radio gear each seem to be well over the $220 I paid for the plane.
So, back to my engine decision. My first thought was to go with the 120 size 4-stroke as recommended by the manufacturer, but I am concerned that it might not be quite enough power for my lumpy grass field. The next size up would be nice, like SJN, a 150 Saito perhaps? Couple of concerns with this idea. 1). Pricey at $370 or so. 2). I hear that they can really suck down the glow fuel...at a rate of maybe 1oz/min? This could be costly to run, when my glow fuel cost $16/gallon. So considering these items I began thinking of a small gas engine. I do not have any gas planes, and so do not know much about them. Would it be feasible to try and fit something like a Zenoah G26 on this plane? I understand this engine weighs about 3.5lbs so that may be of concern. However I understand the Zero has a short nose and generally requires significant weight on the firewall to properly balance. Therefore a small gas engine might be just the ticket? A few benefits I see with a gas engine would be: 1). Cheaper to purchase, the G26 goes for $299. 2). Fuel cost is much cheaper, $2/gallon. 3). No messy oil cleanup on the plane. I think the G26 would still fit the 8" cowl quite nicely too, with just some of the bottom cut away for cooling and the spark plug.

Any advice/opinions/pros/cons of either going the large 4-stroke route, or trying my first small gasoline engine would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, I just had to take all the different parts out of the box when it arrived and check them out. I am amazed at the workmanship and quality of the construction. It seems very well built and the finish is first rate. It is very much worth the price IMO.

Thanks,

Well I also am having the balance problem. I have a OS 108 with the pits muffler, 1800 ma battery sitting as far forward as possible (on the engine mount) and I still need almost 10 oz or so to balance it. So my all up weight on the nose should be about 45oz before it's ready to fly.

I think the G-26 weighs over 50 oz plus muffler but maybe look at a RCS 1.4 weighing in at about 44 oz. It might be a little more than you wanted to spend (around $500) or maybe look at a OS 1.60 or Moki 1.8.

Lots of decisions to make, depends on how much you want to spend.

K.
