Hi Virtualvictum,

I would like to see the pics of your FPE install. I've been considering trying my first gas engine and was looking into the Zenoah G26. I have some concerns though about the weight, and if it will even fit well inside the cowl.

Thanks,

AS you can see the cutouts were very necessary but not what I consider to be too drastic. Most of it hangs out the bottom and to me adds to the aggressive look of the model. Wydah do not be concerned about the weight because she needs it up front. The all up flying weight to my Zero is 15 pounds with CJM retracts. She has large wing area and will still fly great. The weight is from my bathroom scale so no telling how accurate it is. It always lies to me. LOL. Let me know if you have any more questions or want to see more pictures and I will get back to you. Wydah, the g26 is a good motor and a little smaller in displacement and size so if I can shoehorn this 2.4 in her then the g26 should pose no problems for you.

Hi Virtualvictum,

Wow, looks great. Not sticking out much at all really. That prop really shows off the nose.

Still have some concerns going with the gas Zenoah G26 however. The G26 weighs in at about 57oz. I believe your larger FPE 2.4 is only about 48oz. I don't think I could justify the price of the FPE engines, that is why I was looking into the cheaper priced G26, but I'm not sure the airframe can take the weight of that Zenoah. Also I understand gas engines may exhibt more vibration which can be hard on the airframe as well. Does your 2.4 balance it at the recommended CG without any "ballast" ? Did you have to move servo tray, or batteries around?

I'll have to wait and hear from SJN once he maidens and see how the Saito 150 performs too. I haven't ruled out a big 4-stroke, though they are a bit pricey and will sure suck up the glow fuel.

Keep us posted, and how about some more pics of your whole plane? Looks like you've done some detailing on the cowl. Any other weathering or detailing?

Thanks,

Hello,

On the contrary, gas engines, since it's 2-stroke, will vibrate less. In fact, G-26 vibration level is going to be the same as a 13 cc (.75 cubic inch) 4-stroke theoretically.

Hello Wydah, glad you like it. As far as vibration goes I do see a little bit more vibration out of the FPE than I did with the O.S. 1.60 but this may be due to running real rich right now. Smooths out real nice at anything above idle but shakes a bit at idle. Transitions real smooth from idle to full power so she may stay this way as I won't mess with the needles unless I have to. As far as balance point goes I did not have to add anything or move anything around to achieve a balance point of 140mm from leading edge. This is 5mm closer than what they reccomend for the plane (145 to 152mm) but these balance points are not right. Plane is still too tail heavy. I recommend 135mm to 145mm(145 being the farthest point out). This is after flying with the c.g. at 135 on the first one. She really was flying good until I lost elevator. I just throttled back and watched it shallow dive right in from about 150ft up. As far as the weight of the Zenoah goes you have to figure out if you are going to put in retracts or go with the fixed gear set up. The fixed gear should save some weight and whether you use retracts or not I believe that this plane will still fly real good up to 16 or 17 pounds. There is a lot of wing area and the rounded wing tips help with tip stalling. This is my fourth zero kit and every one from 3 different manufacturers has flown exceptionally well. As far as the big glow motors go the price of a gallon of glow fuel is not cheap. Gas motors are more expensive to start out with but in the long run they will save money, even at 2.50 a gallon. Gas is 2.10 a gallon for Amoco 93 octane here right now and a quart of 2 stroke oil (Mercury Quicksilver) is around 2.50. You can get 3 or 4 gallons of premix with the one quart of oil. Remember that engines are more of an investment(at least to me anyway) than the planes are. When you tire of one plane you can always swap out the motor to a diff plane. If its a gas motor than your still paying for pump gas but if it's a big glow motor than your still paying out the wahoo for a gallon. If you can afford it I highly reccomend the zenoah over any glow fuel motor. I bet that g26 hauls her around with authority and no messy cleanup at the end of the day!!!!!! I'll try to get more pics of her as soon as weather permits. I work nights and I want to take outdoor pics bcause my digital camera sucks at indoor, always makes the pics too dark no matter what. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Wydah, I forgot to mention that I did shore up the firewall a bit. I went to Walmart in the auto section and bought some fiberglass mat and resin. It was less than 10 bucks. I cut out a piece to match the inside of the firewall and glassed it in place. I made sure to fill up the void around the plywood mount. If you look at the firewall from the inside you will see what I mean. Only took 30 mins. or so but a must with the added weight.

Hi,

I found some nice pictures of a German build. Postings unfortunately in German but pictures are international...

Best regards

SJN,
Nice Zero, however, I think the spinner of Zero is more rounded
shape. Although it is difficult to find Zero's spinner, I should say
FW-190 spinner is better fit for Zero.
I'm sorry if my word hurt your feeling.

The Saito 150 smashes plastic spinners, so they are not an option
