Hi everybody,

I would appreciate some clarification on judging for both Scale Masters and Top Gun, in regard to airfoils.

In looking at the published (AMA) rules, it seems as though the basic policy is that "If the judges don't think that your airfoils deviate from scale enough to make the aircraft look "un-scale", there is no penalty for altering them." Is that correct?

What about Top Gun?

The reason I ask is that I'm working on a project with Paul Reese, that I would rather NOT use scale airfoils on. (a 1/6th scale King Air B200) We've selected some (Selig) airfoils, based on improving performance for this size airplane, and so I'm wondering if I will be questioned and/or penalized for this.

Anyone with first-hand experience know the answer? Thanks!

Mike,
The judges can only use the documentation that you provide. For both events, there is a minimum requirement for the documentation you must provide. Meet the minimum requirements and no more! The more you provide, the more chance that they will find errors and therefore a reduction in your static score. Airfoil type/shape is not one of the judging criteria, unless you want to make it so (special or unique airfoil).
Make sure you get the rules for the Scalemasters and/or Top gun, they are different than AMA scale.
Good Luck,
Jon

Yes, that is true to a certain extent. But, If you alter them to much you may be down-graded on the "thickness" and/or taper from the front or side views. It's not evident from the side view on an aircraft with a rounded tip, such as a King Air, but watch out with a squared off tip wing, they'll notice. My Thrushes use the "scale" airfoil. The jet (BVM,etc) guys are getting away with wings that are much thicker than scale, but that doesn't mean you(we) won't get "busted".
