How are you measuring??

Tach? Is it calibrated? set up for two prop??

You might want to have it measures by another tach to ensure yours is OK. I mean you could be measuring low and that means your high speed is WAY over the recc specs.

I've owned quite a few Saito s:

72
82
91
100
180

I have mixed luck with them. All but the 82 and 91 has given me some deadstick landings. The 72 and 100 have given me dead-stick crashes. Perhaps because the 91 & 82 are my latest acquire, I've learned how to tune Saito better now to prevent deadsticks.

4-strokes will idle really low like 1000 rpm in situations when you try to shut it off but can't. That's how you get it to idle below 1000 rpm. But I wouldn't set that low of an idle for flying.

The new 82 is the pinnacle of "Bore-outism". It can keep up with the Saito 91 when used w/ 30% nitro fuel, and yet is in a .40 case. APC 14x4W @ 10700 rpm while weighing only 17.5 oz including muffler. This one can go head-to-head with YS 63 on APC 13x4W.

I guess I end up with so many Saito s because of the Power&Reliability-to-Weight&Cost ratio. If we talk purely power-to-weight, YS wins. If we talk power-to-cost, Magnum wins. To me, Saito is a good compromise between performance, weight, reliability, and cost.

I recently got a YS 140 DZ, and it is the best engine I've own, ever, in terms of power-to-weight, transition, reliability. I did get it new for a lower cost (same as Saito 180 retail), so I'd say I striked homerun with this DZ.

Bottom line is, if I can get YS cheaper every time, I wouldn't get another Saito . But reality is, YS steals are hard to come by, so I end up with so many Saito s.

I have almost exclusively Saito engines. Started out with the .72 and liked it so much I just kept buying 'em. I now have 2 .72's, 2 .91's, a 1.20, a 1.50, a 1.80, and I just bought a .82 to replace the .72 in my Funtana 40. In my opinion, they beat the OS's hands down and YS's cost to much so I'll probably never try one of those. As for Magnums,,,,,welll we just won't go there.

I have a .40 on order for a little Waco I have and I guess if I had a 100 I would have a pretty well rounded stable of Saito 's.

Yeah, it is plain to see YS has the best power to weight, that I expect with a supercarger and pump! But The fuel cost is like $50 a gallon here in the UK and that I cant afford!

If theres one reason to get Saito is that it wont break a bank to run.

Anyway guys I have a question... My Saito 91 is one and a half turns open(high speed needle) I need to know if this is too lean for 20% cool power(30% and 10% blend) or if i can close it a bit. Also, after I finish this fuel I'll keep sing 30% cool power, what would be a good needle setting? Thanks!

The post is copied from a different thread. It's just a reference to my buddy Funtana_Cody. He asked if people could only keep positive comments in the Saito Club thread, while he's in our YS Club thread being a punk. That's who the hypocrite comment is refering to.

What kind of RPM are you seeing out of a 100 w/16-4w prop. I'm getting 8700. Seems low to me.

r180, thats about all you will get with that prop, unless you want to do some 30% heli and you'll get to the mid 9s. Good results with a 15/4 APC but on the verge of underpropping. I think a 15/5 is the ticket. Don't know if you can get one though. Zinger makes a 16/5 wood and chop it to 15" Good luck, Joe
