My Mig Flys!! It is a great flying plane! I flew 4 uneventfull but exciting flights. Now I hope Alpha will come out with a nice A-10 or perhaps a Me 262. We need a nice twin powered jet!!

Ed, you say you put retract gear into the alfa mig 15. Just curious- what did the gross weight come out at? I guess it is impossible to stay within the envelope stated by alfa. Did you make reinforcements to compensate? How does it affect performance?

Pictures would be great!

Blue action I installed fix gear whith steerable nose gear , not retracts , as far as weight it only add it a few grams not much , dont have a scale to tell you how much more , Reinforcements were only done in the spars to keep the wing from seperateing in flight . Performance it din`t feel any difference from the first time i flew it whith out landing gear , it carries the gear quite well , it rotates about aprox. 50 feet , i flew the little mig new years day ,what a blast it is to fly ,land and then taxi back , so i will try to post some pics , as soon i figure out how to post them Ed

My MiG is stock. I did not do anything different than the instructions say. I am using an AXI Mini AC 16 turn with a Kokam 3 cell 1500 LiPo. This setup will not ROG, but it does fly great. I don't know how long it will fly, at 6 min of full throttle it is still going strong. On my 1st flight the elevator was trimmed up and it climbed, hit the ground, cartwheeled, and landed on its back. No damage whatsoever. It is a tough little plane.

450g limit??

Hi guys, how critical is it to stay at or under 450g gross weight?

With the MpJet Mk2 and 1320 TP LiPo and some reinforcements, I am exactly at 450g. Got a TP 1900 LiPo the other day, and at full throttle the engine runs about .4 volts higher and .5 more amps compared to the 1320 battery. Could be fun!

But it's about 30g heavier and the little 15 would be at 480g. Any idea how this would impact performance? Pretty confident that the wings would stay on due to inside fuselage reinforcement with tissue and epoxy in the wing root area and second spar.

What total weight do you guys fly your Mig's at? (including Glue!!!)

I just finished my Mig last night...weighs in at 15.9 oz. Used only two servos, built in a little up elevator to counter the "up" effect everyone refers to. Have both 1320 and 1500 batteries to use but will start with the 1320's. Haven't maidened it yet and I'm in the depths of winter with wind chills expected to be in the -35 below range. That's what you get when you live 100 miles north of the frozen tundra of Green Bay. It scoots along my living room carpet pretty good though....I found and extra helpful hint from a previous thread I think all you Alfa Mig owners shoud consider. The little round cap that covers the fan screw is highly probable to be out of balance. Its easy to check (grossly) without sophisticated equipment. Just put it on a very clean (no dirt or dust) level surface and see if its rocks to an even stance. If it tips slightly to one side, mark the opposite rim and put a drop of glue inside that edge. Mine was badly unbalanced and that WILL rob power and speed from your MIG.

Flew the other day with TP1900 battery, total weight at 16.9 Oz. (about 1 Oz over what Alfa specifies).

Flies very nicely, has definietly more oomph than with the 1320. Actually I think I like it better with the big battery, it seems a little less prone to wind turbulence and a little more stable. In bench testing, I get about 10 watts more with the big battery (due to lower internal restistance).

Btw, for the spinner, I tried to leave it completely off. It flies nicely, but it flies even nicer with a balanced spinner!

Sir, when it's really cold, have you tried ROS? I guess the little 15 slides very well on snowy ground. I tried ROF off frosty ground a couple of times, and that works just great!

Happy flying!

I will probably try a ROS but have to wait for a heat wave to get here. (+20 or higher...) I don't know if you've ever flown LI-PO's in REALLY cold weather, but the run time gets shortened so badly that it's hardly worth the trouble of packing up and going out to fly. I MUST BE PATIENT.....

Add another MIG to the fleet, just maidened my MIG. Has an E-flite 370/phoenix 25 speed control/1660mah 3cell pack on the stock fan.
The motor has a smaller diameter so I assume It has plenty of airflow around it, I drilled the cooling holes and opened the back.

It was windy so I figured I would just taxi on the grass but could not resist, so I took off.

The flight was very good, the plane is so smooth, soo nice!

Thanks to everyone for the great sugestions, and ideas in building the model, this is my second r/c model so the help was definatelly essential.

I flew the Mig for 12 minutes straight today and had 900mAh left in the 1900 pack!! Flight was about 50% aerobatics and 50% easy flying. Theoretically should be possible to fly it 20 minutes- depending on pilot exhaustion.. Batteries, Controller and Motor were warm to the touch but not hot. (motor temp was measured by sticking finger into hollowed tail cone) Gimme a break I'm toast!!

Btw did your mig also come with a little package of white powder? Seriously? What's that? Can you go longer with that or what?

Maidened my Mig last weekend-- 3 flights, went great. Turned cold so haven't been back out yet.

I haven't applied the decals yet, think the white powder is wallpaper paste that is recommended in the instructions to help the decals stick, have others used this and do you think it helped?

I didn't use it...I just made sure to seal the completed body with Polycrylic Minwax spray. Good stuff for foam-safe worriers.

Yeah, the white powder is wall paper paste for the decals. One problem with the decals in earlier kits is that they peeled off far too easily. Just a sweaty hand palm was all that was needed.

Congrats MAV,

Sounds like a great time !

Still holding the Sabres at bay on the east coast. Had a long spell of nasty weather , and even though I have quite a bit of stick time on this one ,it always seems to make it's way to the front of the flightline...

Continued good luck all!

Here is my Alpha Mig, Its my 3rd one, Needed more speed, so I put a Himax 2025-5300 motor in and went with Apogee 2480 3s pack, pulls 24 amps static. It flies awesome, jumps off the ground in 10 feet, climbs at a like a bat out of hell, estimate its flyiing around 85-90 mph. Still lands well. I lost my other Migs flying formation with 2 other migs, looked away and then watched the wrong plane, that is why I painted it red. Jack.

Niiiicccee Mig!
You shouldn't fall prey to the old "Wrong Mig" syndrome again either with that colour.

The paint on my mig is Krylon Short Cuts, available at hardware stores and craft stores, works great, comes in little cans in about 12 different colors, doesn't eat foam. i would reccommend that you scuff the factory silver paint with scotchbrite pads before painting.Jack
