This will be a factual review with information on the aircraft, its assembly, components used, the first flights, and modifications that needed to be done to make this plane all it could be. I will only mention other aircraft that are in the same category so you will know what else is out there to check out before making a purchase decision. If you have any questions you may ask them by private message (PM).

    Here we go!

I purchased the Pacific Aeromodels Edge 540T directly from Pacific, located in California. The Pacific website directs you to the Winner R/C site at http://www.winnerrc.com/ so you might as well just go there first. The site advertises $209.99 with a $20 shipping charge when it is all said and done. Some hobby shops carry the models as well, "vanman" here on R/C Universe carries them now in his hobby shop and says he has a package deal on the Edge's. Send him a PM to query.

The specifications for the Pacific Aeromodel Edge 540T 40/70, as listed on the website are as follows:

    Wing Span : 59"
    Length : 52.5"
    Wing Area :620 sq. in.
    Wing Loading:22.3 oz./sq.ft.
    Weight : 6.0 lbs
    Engine Size: 40-53 2C, .52-.72 4C
    Radio Requirement : 4 Channels, 6 Servos.
    All wood Construction.
    Balsa built-up Plug-in wing.
    Covered with real iron-on film
Come with all hardware and accessories.
    95% ready to fly.

I would like to add that this plane needs a 2 1/2" spinner (doesn't mention it in the ad or the instructions), it is covered with Oracover, which is Chinese Ultracote. All the hardware is included and is of high quality. I suggest though, if you are going to want 3D throws on this plane, that you use Dubro heavy duty ball links with 2-56 threads. This will allow smooth operation of all control surfaces at max throw.

The Pacific Aero Edge 540T 40/70 arrived in only 5 business days by standard ground shipping. The box arrived with some minor outside wear and tear, but none of that found its way into the inside. The entire model came neatly packed in one box, double backed with clear plastic over the parts and carboard over that.

Here's full throw with the included hardware, no Dubro heavy duty ball links. Small side note, it will do all the maneuvers in the book with these throws, the surfaces are deceptively effective.

As you can see from the previous post I used an aftermarket (Sullivan) tailwheel assembly to keep a spring between the rudder and the side forces on the tailwheel.

I see a great deal of discussion about engines to use on this plane. I chose the YS .63 S 4-stroke.

The YS .63 S 4-stroke turns an APC 13x4 Wide 2-blade prop at 11,840 at wide-wide-open-throttle and idles at 2,000 RPM (more on those specs later).

I mounted the YS following the directions that came with the PA Edge, and used the technique of stiff paper to mark my holes for all the cowl cutting.

The thrust washer should be 5 inches from the firewall (the one the motor mount screws to) measured as in the picture from where the interlocking plywood can be seen on the outside of the engine box.

The firewall is fuel-proofed. I chose to strengthen the glue joints with 30 min epoxy (so it would run deep into any gaps) just to make sure I didn't vibrate the thing apart with the YS. I've heard of the interlocking plywood getting loose.

Fuel tanks for YS engines can be a source of confusion and problems later if you aren't careful. Using a high quality fuel tank (instead fo the one that came with the plane) will allow you to rest easy with that 9 p.s.i. of pressure inside your plane. YS engines pressurize the fuel tanks with the crankcase instead of the exhaust. The regulator (that thing that is mounted on the pushrod covers) regulates the fuel pressure.

Just follow the directions that come with your YS engine, if you are fortunate enough to be able to afford one, and use a Hayes or Tettra fuel tank. Scrap the cheap fuel line that came with the plane too, my started breaking off every time I pulled out the fuel dot to refuel.

Here's a couple of pictures of the fueling system and engine with the fuel lines attached.

As you can see in the previous pictures I used a fuel filter. I chose to use one normally for cars due to its larger size for better flow, and more discriminating filter to catch the small stuff. I also use a fuel filter on my fuel jug.

I mounted my fuel dots on the sides of the fuselage, one under each wing leading edge, making sure I was going through some plywood for strength as I push and pull on them.

Click on the pictures and them make them "full size" so you can see the fuel dots...slick.

The wheel pants have been known to be weak how they are mounted per the instructions (RCU testimonies) so I took a socket head machine screw and put it through, put a washer on the inside with a nylon locknut. It took some needle nose to get in there, but my wheel pants haven't given me any problems (except they are extra weight!). The pants are fiberglass with plywood glassed in where they connect to the landing gear...pretty strong really.

They look great, but I took them off after only a few flights...they don't get along with grass very well.

I've also heard from other PA Edge owners that the landing gear mount is weaker than it should be. I took some dense balsa triangles and 30 min epoxy and glued them to the inside around the edges of the plywood landing gear mount. Other people have taken plywood and glued in a horizontal former on each side that reinforces the gear plate.

I couldn't get a good picture down inside the fuse of that reinforcement, but you get the idea.

Well, the last thing was the linkages. The hardware that comes with the plane is of good quality, but will wear in time if you plan on using 3D throws. Here's a couple of pics with the included hardware.

I really liked putting together the pull-pull and mounting the servos in the tailsection. This plane goes together with ease and looks solid when complete. Don't cut the pull-pull cables too short...getting them just right can be tough, so don't crimp or glue until you are happy.

You'll see in the next set of pictures that I chose to tint my canopy. I used Lexan car body tranparent tint and painted the inside of the plastic. The canopy was already cut to fit, so I had to handle it carefully to avoid any finger prints. I just put on several coats to get the darkness I wanted. In the sunlight it isn't quite so dark. Dye won't work to tint the canopy, so you've got to paint it. No pilot (extra weight).
