It's really the same technique. Cover up to the tip, then use the heat gun while pulling with a glove, and STRETCH the covering over the tip

Any tips on "scalloped" edges? See the pic below, rudder & elevator. BTW, the elevator hinges are not glued yet. I know to wait until after the plane is covered.
Thanks!
Joe

A variation of the same thing.

Think of it this way Joe:

Imagine that you have a sheet of rubber (Like the kind a balloon is made of) and it was glued onto that elevator to within 1/4" or so of the scallop.

Now pull and stretch the rubber sheet over the scallop so that it conforms to the shape.

It's really thsame thing with covering - Most people forget that as you heat it, aside from shrinking, you can also stretch it.

The combination of stretching here, and shrinking there can give some really astounding results.

BTW, if anyone is going to the Toledo show, Faye Stilley will be hosting a symposium at 2pm on Fri and Sat. It will be worth seeing for those people intrested in learning to cover.

how about this yall take a guillows kit sheet the entire airframe with 1/32" balsa make sure you cover the entire frame not in sections plus the grains have to go the same direction as from main to wingtip. be carefull when sanding the balsa will get super thin like 1/82" or so then start learning the technique and pactice practice practice. it saves you a lot of covering materials in the long run and you will have enough covering film left over to cover the rest of the plane once you get the idea try it thats what i did but i got burnt out doing that after the 9th time for one thing i was covering the cessna 170 with chrome will again later oh and when you do peel off the covering on 1/32" sheet try to get it off in one shot use ur heating iron to add heat when pulling it out i recomend using hanger 9 ultracote multi-temp dont use shelf paper as they only can handle under 200 degres thats just crap. so take my word and work for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to MinnFlyer's excellent videos and tips, I was able to do a decent covering job on the H9 Mustang:

Thanks. By the way, that's an authentic Tuskegee Airmen color scheme, just in case you were wondering. I am a scale buff, so I don't make up my own color scheme or butcher up an existing or existed color scheme.

Very very nice indeed!

I'm curious as to what color covering you used. Is that Silver Monokote?

That's Silver Ultracote. I used Ultracote Deep Red for the tail and wingtips, which is close to "Insignia Red" on the full size.

Edit: added wingtips

Geart thread! I didn't know the heat gun is so helpful! I can't imagine myself covering without it anymore! As I was about to cover my trainer's wing again I saw this thread and didn't believe how the heat gun shrinked the covering to be so smooth in the attached movie.

Thanks alot MinnFlyer!

I know what you mean. For years I covered with just an iron. Then I saw a video of someone covering a wingtip with a heat gun and I went right out and bought one!
