Since Richard didn't chime in, I'll field this one.

While I can't say exactly what Richard did, I would not cover the areas that were to be red with silver first. Just leave enough silver (Say 1/4 - 3/8" ) for the red to overlap (More if it's over an open surface)

Or to be more accurate - You always want your seams facing AWAY from the airstream. So I would cover the red tail FIRST, then apply the Silver.

Remember, when covering always try to work from back to front, and from bottom to top

Has anyone seen the MonoKote covering video listed in the new Tower sale catalog. I have been building and covering for the last 10 years and still think I could improve. What I am looking for is instructions on the finer points like the pros use, or is this the old basic info on the tape they put out several years ago.

I'm not sure if this applies to this thread but here goes. I seen some where a heat activated adhesive you brush on. I was wondering if this takes the place of dope or if you should dope it first? I think this is for cloth and not plastic but I brought it up to find out if it had any application or to add any ease in applying plastic.
Also, Sigs instructions are kinda veg about this. They racomend using clear silicone to attach control link tubes to the fus. because it won't distort the tube and it'll allow some flex. My question is would you do this before or after you dope it? I'm getting ready to put the stand off blocks in and I'll be ready to dope.
(sarry for the book)
One last question. How much dope should you use and should everything be doped? (I saw on another thred they said to epoxy the fire wall insted of doping it)
Thanks
Shawn

Minn Flyer: Thanks for the new videos on covering. They are very helpful for a beginner like me.

Question? Will UltraCote go on top of UltraCote using the windex method? Or should I lay out on glass and leaving the back on the bottom piece
and iron down and them apply to plane?

Thanks again. I read all your posts. I really appreciate you and RCKen. You don't realize what a service you provide to us beginners.

Glad we can help Jim. That's why we're here.

UC will not work with the windex method. Windex doesn't activate the adhesive like it does with MK.

However, I never apply trim pieces first - that's not to say it's a bad way to do it, I have just never seen a need to do it that way.

In fact, I rarely even use the windex method. I did it in the video just to show how it's done.

For a small piece, like those stars, I would do them like I did the "Feathers" on the bottom of that wing - just start at one side (Using low heat) and work your way to the other, pressing out the air as you go. If you DO get a bubble, just pop it with a pin.

If the piece were larger. I would lay it in place, trace the outline with a pencil or fine-line marker, and then depending on the size and shape, I would either cut a section out of the center (Leaving about 1/2" all around) or poke a bazillion holes in the under-layer to allow the air to escape.
