i flew a highly repaired firebird (the original) in 20 gusting to 25 mph winds. it only flew one direction cuz when i turned the wind carried it too far. anyway i landed with no damage. then i was carrying it to the car and the wind blew the wing in half.

Saturday afternoon I had the LT-40 in the backyard, chiefly to balance it on its CG (post taildragger conversion) but also to take pictures. My 5-y.o. son was out with me and held it while I took a picture. A few minutes later he was standing next to it, and then he JUMPED over the fuselage!!! I just told him, "you're never going to do anything like that again." Tonight (weather- and instructor-permitting) will be its maiden flight.

I have learned not to try and force a 70" wing into a 68" wide Trunk! I have learned that a finger in a moving prop hurts! I have learned that Planes don't fly well with dead batteries! I have learned that I do some real dumb things!

Hah, come to think of it I've damaged a few planes in non-flying incidents........I used to fly my CG Gentle Lady in the backyard, was great fun on windy days. One time I got the plane down in rather windy conditions, was feeling real good about it. I had I sitting on the ground, then the wind got under one wing, picked the model up, and drove the opposite wing into the ground. Not a big repair, but annoying.

Then there was the time I walked into the wingtip of my Butterfly-style powered glider I had standing on its nose, leaning against the kitchen table. Another minor but annoying repair.

LOL Jomamma I hear ya, I am all the time bashing my Tiger against door frames, front seat or doors of my car, etc, but it hasn't sustained any damage yet, despite the relatively delicate tail surfaces.

Here's another. Never spill your Budweiser next to a motor/esc/battery pack. Magic smoke will pour out of your $60 speed control as you check the motor.

How bout this: Building my Phoenix Sonic ARF I dropped my wing while installing the servo. For some reason my body reflexes dictated catch it with my foot. My plane never even made it the field before needed repairs made it airworthy for the maiden flight. Now talk about obscenities! ! LOL the beer and cigarette incidents are hillaris! Appreciating this humor is reserved to a limited few. PS you are not suppose to let the smoke out!

For those of you who have problems with X-actos, remember that CA is your friend. Each time you slice or stab, puncture or penetrate your skin, reach for the CA. The stuff was first invented as a way to bond skin and seal wounds in a hurry (ie- off the battlefield). It will seal that cut quickly and allow you to keep working. Also, your wound will begin to heal underneath the CA scab as if you're wearing a bandaid. It will fall off in a few days and you can breathe easy!

CA is your friend!

I was putting the final touches on my LT-40. I had it setting on
its wheels on my work table. I moved off to one side, brushed
the front of the plane and watched it roll off the other side of the
table. This resulted in the rudder snapping off the fuselage.

Said a few choice words that day. Re-attached the rudder and
much to my surprise, when the plane had its maiden flight, it
flew great.

More non-flight destruction: when I re-entered the hobby a few years back, it was via a GWS cub. Then I bought a tiger moth, and added all of the modifications from the tiger moth squadron website (dunno if it's still around)--flying wires, packing tape LE, balsa LG strut covers, etc. The night I finished it, I apparently neglected to let the cat out of the workshop as I left. I awoke several hours later to a loud 'CRASH!' and went to investigate. As I opened the door, a grey striped streak (my cat) zipped out between my feet and down the staircase. I turned on the light, and there was my moth, flattened, with a shoebox full of VHS tapes on top of it. One night and a lot of odorless CA later, it flew. I think its best if you uglify the plane before you fly it--then the pressures off. That plane has lost 1/2 a wing in flight (came down under perfect control), flown directly into a football goalpost, and just last night, lost its motor mid flight, which decided to chop the nose to bits as the prop spun unanchored. I resurrected it again. I'm thinking of naming it "Lazarus".

You got that right. Stupidity or dumb luck, planes fly better after they've been uglied up a bit.
