rcking -> GIANT TF P-51 G-38 or G-45 (7/3/2004 8:17 PM)

i am building a GIANT TF P-51 its going to be covered in monocote to keep it lite,i was also wondering if balance is a factor,i would rather have useful weight than dead weight.i was hoping for some imput on what engine to install a G-38 or G-45! thanks!

I am awaiting the ARC type and have decided to install the DA-50.

Moki 210,completely enclosed 4.5-5.00 hp,slimline inverted muffler. No need to add lbs nose or tail, but will not do 3D or hang the Stang from the prop or unlimited verticle.Moki cost,319.00 frt included from Chief Aircraft.Remember that with this combo you have better HP to weight ratio than the real P-51D mustang.Tom

I haven't flown one , but I saw the TF 1/5 scale ARF fly with a G45 and it was not overpowered.

I have a G-45 in mine and it doesn't do 3D but it flies well. The G-38 will fly it ok but I think you'll be happier with the G-45. Its not super fast but flies with authority.

I have a US41 in mine with an 18/10 prop. Plane flies pro-typical of a Mustang. If you want a 3-D bird go to the acro section. War birds are not 3-D machines. I would put the G45 in just for the weight. I had to add a few oz.s in the tail to balance mine.

What about a G-62?? im looking into buying one that has one installed already.. is that to much engine for a monocoted plane? Seems like a little to much to me, but hey thats what the throttle stick is for eh ? :)

US Engines 41 with a 18x6-10 prop..flies nicely in my ARF version the G-38 flew my kit version on the TF P-51 ... if I had the G-45 I woulda used it over the G-38

Since you have both engines already, why don't you measure & weigh them, and make a mockup firewall to see how they fit in the cowl.

My YA P47 was built with a US41 because (1) the US 35 is the same weight, and (2) the cowl completely encloses the engine, no cutouts. (The exhaust system with scale outlets had to be fabricated.) Nose weight had to be added.

I like the look, because there is no carburetor sticking through the cowl. I like the performance, because it has an abundance of power with an APC 20X10. It will do huge loops, four-point rolls, and has a fair glide path on deadstick (always clamp your clunk hose to the tube!)

Anyway, if your objective is to use one of your existing engines, that's how I'd recommend you make the choice, on weight and fit. I doubt you'll completely enclose the engine, in the narrow P51 cowl, but then maybe that's not on your list of criteria.

Good luck,
Dave Olson

hello guys
i just got back online we were out of power for a day! anyway thanks for all the imput , sounds like it will be my g-45 and an after market spinner! i hope the balance works out, there is alot of room to move the battery around. thanks again

I would pick the G38 mainly because of the rear exhaust. With the G45 you might have to put a big, ugly cutout for the exhaust. The G38 is a good engine.

Originally I had planned to use a Fuji 50 in my TF Mustang ARF but that big muffler would not do, I settled on a ZDZ 40RV-L. this lightweight 40cc (2.4ci) powerplant has a side exhaust and a rear intake. It turns a 20x10 Zinger prop almost at 7000 revs. it produces a lot of thrust. It weighs less than a G-38 and has an inverted pitts-style muffler available. it produces more than enough power and keeps the model's weight down for a nice wing loading. You can see some pix of the Mustangwith the engine installed at: http://groups.msn.com/SuzukiGSGarage/models.msnw?Page=1

Course this doesn't answer your G-30 or G-45 question, but it's what I did! A good G-38 will turn a 20x8 prop nicely though!
