Yo! I hooked up my 3 yr old rustler that I found in my shed with a Novak XRS reversible ESC, a method 15T motor, 5x11 bearings in the rear to replace the bushings, and I have 2 pro-max 3000 Ni-MH batteries, and I had to buy a new servo. With all the money I spent, I could have almost bought the new Brushless VXL.

My question: I am rather dissapointed with the speed, and a guy at the track is going to help me play with gears, but is there any way to get a 2 speed transmission on there, how much would it cost, where can I buy it, and how much would it help? Right now, 19T motors are keeping up with me, so I am hoping I just have it geared wrong, but I think a 2 speed transmission might help even more.

Not sure about cost, but you'd need a 3 channel reciever. Too bad you already dumped all that cash, a VXL would have had more than enough speed for you...

why a 3 channel remote??

i appreciate that, and even though my brushless rustler and my 2 speed gas rustler go about the same speed, I drive the gas one majority because first off its not store bought....its my frankenstein of a creation.... 2nd it does feel more manly almost to hear and smell a motor running....plus I just put gas in and go....no waiting for the battery to charge.... I love them both though.

Don't you need a 3rd channel to shift? I thought that's how it worked?

nah...the transmission does it on its own...I believe itsthe amount of friction and rpms is what makes it shift...there is a small hex screw u ca adjust for the shift point also...3rd channel is only needed if u have a differential like the Tmaxx does in which you can use the 3rd channel to switch to reverse

Is there a difference between the vxl transmission and a regular rustler with three metal gears inside? I stipped the two small gears inside today (at different times) and replaced them with metal. Now my ball diff just stripped out. If I replace it with metal and I good to go, or am I better off to just buy a new vxl tranny and replace the whole thing?

Also, I stripped two plastic spur gears today. My pinion gear is already metal. If I replace the spur gear with metal will I have problems elsewhere? I mainly stripped all these gears going off big jumps and hitting the brakes in the air to stop rotation.

NO METAL SPUR!!!!! METAL PINION + METAL SPUR = BAD (sparks and stuff)

I was told that aluminium pinions help to prevent stripping spur gears, but idk.

steel is best aluminum heats up and expands and with enough stress and heat it can get sharp and dig into other gears and later strip.

technically it is very much allowed....this is the official rustler thread...not the official electric ruslter thread..everyone just happens to talk mostly electric...besides....I have 2 electric rustlers and 2 gas rustlers and the only friends I have on this site r in this thread....I've been in here since december last year...fyi...lol not startin anything....just sayin...lol

Well, this thread is in the electric category, so technically it should be the Official Electric Rustler thread..

I watched your video of your 2-speed nitro rustler... so stinkin loud, I'd be embarrassed to drive it around a nice quiet neighborhood like you did. Almost as appealing as listening to a chainsaw. Electric Brushless is superior in so many ways...

O. come-on, I also like the sound of Nitro, as well as the smell, as well as I got a Warhead, possibly the loudest R/C ever made, and everyone likes it! I mean they don't know what it is, so when they here it, they all come out to watch. And besides that, no-one minds, as long as you pack up at a reasonable hour, or run it at 1 or 2 in the afternoon, when no one is around.

OK OK... I concede. I suppose I can agree the noise isn't all bad and yes of course it can draw a crowd. I admit, since the first time I saw a gas powered RC car I wanted one (like probably 15 years ago). But alas, I found brushless and read of all the advantages as to lower maintenance and equivalent speeds and I was sold. I also enjoy the quiet whine of the VXL.....

Do rpm parts fit other than traxxas and associated? Can I make them fit?
