I have a Lazer V-300 4-stroke mounted successfully in my 1/5th scale and am wondering if there are any tuned pipes speciffically for four strokes that actually work that I could put on it. thanks.

They have to exist as you can put straight pipe on exhaust and you can also install intake pipe on 4-stroke engine (like on motorbikes), but I don’t know where to get them.

Due to the way the mufflers mount on the Lasers you would need pipes made specifically for it. The benefits, if any, would be minute. Your engine is a very torquey engine and has no need for such anyway.

I was searching for a way to get a bit more performance out of my Saito 72 (Rather than buy the 82) and so considered buying a pipe, but from what i can gather here there is no point. Is this the case and if not can anyone tell me where i might find one.

Central hobbies has them. But all of theirs is for 1.4 pattern planes. You will only get a modest increase in power from a pipe in a four stroke. Best to simply up the nitro.

thanks for the info. but as it usually goes Im was hoping for a simple answer for more power. Like go buy this pipe it really works. etc. but thanks again.

The 4-cycle pipes are just low noise/low back pressure mufflers. Little or no power is gained by using them.

The long explaination by ukrconsul fails to note that the proper length for a tuned exhaust pipe for our engines would be longer than the plane. The ideal lenght is determined by the RPM and speed of sound, a 426 cubic inch hemi running at 10,000 RPM would have the same ideal pipe length as a .52 cu. in. OS. They can be a multiple less than the ideal length but the sonic waves have to travel to the end and back to the valve several times makeing the effect much weaker.

I did actually speak to a guy in the uk who makes tuned pipes for a variety of 4 strokes and he explained that they will not add Rpm to the engine but torque is measurably higher. Unfortunately, although the pipe is 35 pounds Sterling if you have a Saito the manifold is 60 and you have to use their because of the unusual sizing.

If the torque was increased by any considerable amount the RPM would go up. Measurable means you have to have a dyno to see the power increase. That would mean you would not notice the power increase and would be practically nonexistant.

the explanation i got was that if you run a four stroke under load for a period the pressure backs up and so you get a drop in power and subsequently rpm. With a pipe attached this does not happen.
anyway all sounds like much of a muchnes to i'm gonna get an 82.

After 48 oz of fuel mine turns an APC 14x6 at 9,200 peaked and 9,000 richened down a little, and has great idle already.

Is that good? My Saito 72 is turning a 14X4W at 9400 richened a little.

How does a Wide compare in terms of normal props?
