In 1894, the first turbine engine was conceived, developed, engineered, and produced by McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis where aviation was born. Another fact for you history butts, McDonnell Douglas acquired Boeing Aircraft last year. And by 100% shareholder vote, McDonnell Douglas changed its name to Boeing Aircraft. Isn't that something to change its name to the company it bought?

A P2-V? What a piker. Here's R-4360 x 8. To get an idea how large the plane really is, look at the second picture. A two seat trainer in front, that boat looking thing behind it is one wing float of the HK-1.

Nothing like a Howard or Staggerwing making a high speed pass ( buzzin the airfield) or flying behind a Kinner screaming its guts out at 1650 RPM[:D]. Always wondered where Maytag Messerschmitt came from till my friend made a pass at Flabob airport, sounded like a John Deere 2 cyl. with the throttle wide open and the governor stuck.

That old "Corncob" was a whale of an engine, many is the time I have roundly cursed them.

Can you imagine taking your HK-1 in to your local shop for a minor tune-up, and having to buy 448 spark plugs and 63 sets of points? Right. 56 spark plugs and seven point sets per engine, and a total of eight engines. Only Howard Hughes could have afforded it.

As I said, a remarkable engine. It taught me many new curse words. But I liked it anyway.

Or telling the guy in the hangar that it knocks a bit (making a noise like this ... blinkblink blonk) , but only when throttling down to 2000 revs... sort of.....occasionally.

Nah. The Colemans are "Hiss" and the turbines are more "Whoosh" like. at least until the AB is kicked in, then even if there's no bang at ignition they go WHOOSH.

I just looked at the map of your neck of the woods. The I-10 runs into your town...............

Argh! .... I go on the 10 a lot (the bit that stops just before it disappears into the Pacific in Santa Monica). It's not as bad as the run from LA to Santa Monica I hope?

p.s. Also, I notice E Hollywood Bvld runs North of where you live..... Boy! That's a long road, as Hollywood Bvld runs west of the I-5 near me!

There's a long gap in Hollywood Bvld. Our local stretch stops on the east side of Hurlburt, doesn't come anywhere near me.

If you see Navarre on your Florida map, on the east-west highway 98 where route 87 goes north to I-10, I'm about half way between Navarre and Fort Walton Beach.

Or if you see the county line between Saznta Rosa and Okaloosa counties, I'm roughly two miles east of the line.

Nice picture anyway. Click "Prev" and there's a picture of the Bear's engine, this time with a four blade prop. I don't think I've seen more than two pictures of the Bear with the same prop. What does it usually fly with? the fat blade three, regular four, what?

Incidentally, the Bear was originally built with the R-2800 also, even though it has the R-3350 now.

bill,

they switched back to their 4 blade prop last year. they said that it runs the shorter race course better and that it doesn't vibrate as much as the three blader on the existing course where the turns have become tighter.

still, the 3 blader sure does look purty.

i would like to build the rare bear ARF by thunder tiger but the kit is such a p.o.s., that i'm afraid i prolly won't bother.
