Hey guys!
I'm going to build a Vailly Typhoon. I've built before but not with the use of a crutch. What is it and what is the best way to make one? I just came back from Schenectady The Warbirds fun fly...
I'm excited to start building it after seeing it there...I have the kit cut by American Kit Cutters..
Thanks for all your help guys!!!!

Well xtraflyr, I believe a crutch is a piece of balsa and/or plywood in the shape of the fuselage in profile. The rest of the fuselage is then constructed with additional formers or plastic/fiberglass shells attached thereto.

I once built a Dave Platt ME-109. He kept making references to a crutch in the instructions. Boy did I do a lot of head scratching over that one. It turned out that it was a longitudinal stringer that extended from the firewall to the tailpost down both sides of the fuselage. When viewed from a top view standpoint, it resembles a crutch

HEY WARBIRD MODELERS, CANT SAY FOR SURE ABOUT VAILLY AVIATION, AS I HAVE'NT SEEN ROY'S PLANS. I'VE BUILT FROM NICK ZIROLI'S PLANS AND THE CRUTCH IS THE FIRST PART BUILT. LAY OUT THE PLANS ON YOUR BUILDING TABLE, LAY A PIECE OF PLASTIC WRAP OVER THE PLANS. NOW YOU CAN SEE THE CRUTCH. IT LAY'S IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BULK HEADS,FORMERS, AND FIREWALL. THIS IS A SIMPLE WAY OF BUILDING. ONCE THE CRUTCH IS BUILT, YOU SIMLPY SLIDE THE BULKHEADS,FORMERS, AND FIREWALL OVER THE CRUTCH AND GLUE THEM WHERE THEY BELONG ACCORDING TO THE PLANS. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FRAME UP A FUSELAGE IN ABOUT THREE HOURS. DEPENDING ON YOUR CRAFTSMANSHIP AND ABILITY. ONCE THE BULKHEADS,FORMERS AND FIREWALL ARE IN PLACE, RUN THE LONGERONS OR STRINGERS ALONG EACH PIECE IN THE NOTCHED OUT PART. IT SHOULD START TO RESEMBLE THE AIRCRAFT YOUR BUILDING AT THIS STAGE. NOW YOUR READY FOR SHEETING. ITS THAT EASY. I'M NO EXPERT BY ANY MEANS, BUT THIS REALLY IS EASY. JUST TIME CONSUMING. YOU NEED TO TAKE YOUR TIME AND MAKE A NICE NEET FUSELAGE SO THE SHEETING FLOWS OVER THE LONGERONS. NEETNESS DOES COUNT, EVEN IN AREA'S YOU WONT SEE. THIS PRACTICE WILL MAKE YOU A QUALITY BUILDER. PUT SOME PRIDE INTO YOUR WORK. SHOW YOUR FELLOW MODELERS THE INSIDE OF THE FUSE BEFORE YOU BOLT THE WINGS ON. YAH, THATS RIGHT I BUILT THAT. THEN REMEMBER THAT THOUGHT WHEN THE AIRCRAFT IS TEST FLOWN. IT FLY'S!!! AND I BUILT IT!! THE SELF GRADIFICATION IS AWESOME. HOPE THIS HELPS.
