You have to host them somewhere to post them...

Hey Acam, may I host your plans in a zip folder on my website?

Hey, how did you prep the coro for the welder?

I used a combination of gluing techniques when I built my first Spad Something Extra.
1. I Woodpecker the coro and used Polyurethane glue spritzed with water.
2. I cleaned the coro with a acetone dampened cloth and wiped it dry with a clean cloth
when I used Welder.
3. I used thin CA in none stressed areas.

BTW, I added "Previous | Next" tags to each page, top and bottom. The plans were too cumbersome to navigate without them. Hope this helps!

I started the build last night, going slow on this one. I don't have all the materials I need, getting some of them tomorrow. I got the spar glued together, but still need the lattice. Got the wings cut out, and I'm going to get the pipe ordered tomorrow. It's supposed to be in friday, then I'll build the fuse. I started on JJ's corocub today also. This is going to be interesting, first time working on two planes at once. I just love the simplicity of SPADS. I will have to order a flight pack for one of the planes. I think I'll go with two elevator servos to be safe.

Oh yeah, acam, what flight pack did you buy for yours? Where did you get it?

Hey toddly, you are just full of questions,I'll try to answer some. If you use welder glue half the time I don't do any prep at all. But If you want to, just wipe the coro with acetone or laquer thinner. Yes you can put the plans on your website. I used a Hi-Tek flight pack that I bought from a local hobby shop. $93.00 for RX, 4 servos, battery pack and switch harness.

This is the nicest SPAD yet. I wonder if I could go 50% bigger and use my 33cc Homelite conversion!

Got both spars done, one wing is drying right now, the welder glue is kind of a pain, it keeps trying to slide and I don't have enough of the right kind of clamps to hold the wing so I have to do them one at a time. The pipe will be here friday.

Since this thread has become so long I would like to close it out. I had no idea it would get this many hits and responses. I believe it has done its purpose and once one gets this long people lose interest in starting from the beginning and going through all the posts. The plans are now easily accessed on the "spad to the bone" site and some of the original pics and measurements have been modified, so don't go by the ones in this thread. This is really a great flying plane and I hope to see a lot of them posted in the near future.

Wow it's been this long since you built this plane! I'm still working with some of your techniques-thanks again acam.

I'm well along on the construction of the SPAD EXTRA. I was looking at pics of the SIG Somethin Extra and it is quite noticeable that the nose on the spad is a lot longer. Got me to wondering how come the SIG could be shorter and still balance out. I have the wing as far back as practical and it just barely makes it with a MDS 46 up front. It also looks like my plane may weigh more than 6 lbs. maybe as much as 7. It's 4 mm all the way. Incidently, I set the wings on the floor and stood on them. Granted, I don't weigh a lot, but I would never dream of standing on a balsa wing. I did a few things differently that probably accounts for the extra weight. I put a wood filler in the trailing edge joint of the wings. It has a 33deg. triangular cross section so the TE is not pinched. I used two layers of 4 mm folded for the rons and hinged with ROBART hinges. I had to make up drill guides so the hinge holes would fall in line exactly. Instead of dowels in the wings, I used pieces of AL tube and I will use a springy rubber washer and a hitch pin clip on each one to pull the wing halves up tight. I left out the nylon wing bolts and there will be a screw joining the spars on the centerline. I also put aerosol foam in the turtle deck because it felt like it wouldn't handle even a little squeeze.

For what its worth lunbom, this particular plane has the elevator and rudder servos in the tail whereas the Sig kit has them in the servo bay. Because the elevator and rudder servos are in the tail, the plane is more tail heavy than the kit and so the wing needs to be further back to compensate for this.

Hope this helps some,

But of course! If I build another one I may try to shoehorn them in up forward.

Lunbom, I see you are having trouble with balancing the plane. I know what you mean. The reason for the wing being back farther than the balsa plane is what crash master stated about the servos being in the tail and also coro is heavier than balsa. I only put them there on that plane for convenience. But I have built several since then and they will go up front. The 4-mil wing will add almost a pound to the overall weight. Just build one out of 2-mil and compare the difference. Once you get the CG right and trimmed you should be pleased with the way it flies. One word of advice is, because this plane is heavier than the SE it doesn't like underpowered engines.

I am currently building a .25 version and I am going to wind up putting the receiver and battery in the wing. The wing is also going to be non-removable. I'll post pics and a flight report as soon as it is finished.

I can vouch for that, The .40 Magnum XL I put on my first one was a slug. It almost didn't loop because the lack of power. It was more like a stall loop. I could pull up vertical and it would stall, then flip over on its back. Not really a loop IMHO.

Acam37,

I would like to see that .25 size. Will it be similar in size to the Herr Extra or is it a little bigger?

Here it is ,Omaha. I put a yardstick in front and a servo for scale. I am going to use a Magnum .28 BB engine. Being so small I decided to make the wing fixed and also do away with a landing gear.I hopr ther is enough power to hover.

Looks pretty nice to me. That one should be fun. What do you think it will weigh when you finish?

This project was shelved for a while but maybe next week I will fly it .When I do I will start a new thread and give the measurements and all up weight. Even if it doesn't fly well. All the dimensions are eyeballed and TLAR, so we will just have to see. I am hoping for around 3 pounds.
