Default Need assistance with B-17

Guys and Gals,

I am building a 1/14th B-17 Fort. Approximately 89-inch span and all-up in the neighborhood of fifteen pounds. I need help with the engine arrangement. As I am on a budget, I am trying to use on-hand stuff as best as I can. I have a pair of OS .40LA's and one .46FX. For the same 120-or-so dollars, I could buy another two LA's or another FX (still available at my LHS). I believe that the quad-.40's will work, but would it be better to have a pair of the FX's inboard and the pair of 40's outboard? Or is it better to keep them all the same make and model? Thanks in advance for the help.

Bryan

I would go with 2 more LA's to keep all the engines the same. The FX's a little more powerful and could lead to other problem in an engine out. Besides it will be easier to set-up with all 4 engines the same.

I can't see why FX's inboard and LA's outboard wouldnt work, you would still have a balance of power. There maybe a reason not to, but I can't think of one. Good luck with the build.

LAs are lighter and more reliable.

LAs and FXs may turn the same prop, but not at the same rpm.

If you have one of the FXs quit, you sure won't have balanced thrust!

Parts may become a problem with the FXs.

If you buy two more LAs you will still have the FX to put on a sport plane for the days when you don't feel like hassling with the 17.
