The Magnum manual wants 18% lube and all castor. Postings on the Magnum manufacturer help board state they can run on standard synthetic or synthetic-castor mix but you have to tune it carefully and never run it lean. Interestingly enough they do not recomend commercial four stroke fuels. Not sure why.

I'll run a small batch of 0% nitro, 16% oil and see what happens. For break in I'll mostly be using the low nitro, 18% oil batch I mixed last weekend.

Status: offline 		Comet Kart in Greenfield In has Klotz oil at $6.95 a qt and coolpower oil at $21 a gallon and will ship.

ok i've been trying to read a LOT on this forum about home brewing because well i just can't afford to keep buying Nitro fuel by the pre-mixed bottle. It's expensive. I have a .28 Nitro Engine for my Ofna Ravager. It runs on 30% but the car stays cooler at 20% which i prefer. Personally if i can save money i don't care about power from nitro. I just wish to drive around my buggy and have fun. I don't race "yet". So let's see if i can get this right....

I mix 1 gallon of: 130oz

2% Castor Oil (Can i get this at a local store?) 2.6oz
18% Synthetic Oil (Can i get this at a local Gas station or Super market?) 23.4oz
80% Methanol (Can i get this at a local store?) 104oz

Is that correct for a budget hobby fuel??

I live in New Jersey USA and prices on everything is going up and i've been getting hour cuts from this damn recession. Personally i just want to go out and have more relaxing days and drive my buggy without worrying about how much fuel i'm using because it's so expensive....

My Nitro Engine runs very rich as it is a large one for nitro engines.

Also say i wanted to add 20% nitro to my mix. Could i just buy a gallon of pre-mix 20% and poor in 5% of that to have some nitro in my mix???

You can probably pick some up at your local motorcycle/karting shop or maybe your LHS has some. Alternatively, you can buy SIG castor online in small quantities.

Again, you may find that your local motorcycle/kart shop has some oil that mixes with methanol (probably Klotz or Morgans). Alternatively you can get some much higher quality oil from Cooper Fuels. In fact, if you buy their "Plus C" oil it already has the correct amount of castor mixed in with it. You'll have to email them because they don't list the oil on their website.

Sometimes it's available from hardware stores (don't get denatured alcohol, it's not the same stuff) otherwise if there's a speed shop in your area they ought to have some.

That'll work just fine although if you get the higher quality oil you can safely go down to 12% or so without sacrificing engine life and you'll gain a little performance.

The other thing you might need is some nitromethane. The speed shop may be able to help out there too. In a budget fuel you can use as little as 5%-10% in most cases. You could mix 0% and 20% fuels as you suggest to get an intermediate nitro percentage.

Status: offline 		My son actually races a 28 in his car using just methanol and 20% castor. So far it's done about 30 hours of running and right now I've got it spread all over my dining room table because he asked me to check it out while he waited for some spare parts. It's near perfect still .

Status: offline 		He's right. Percent by volume. 10% of the gallon is nitro so it's 10% nitro. I work use airbrake deicer for methanol so I wouldn't listen to me if I were you anyway.
