I've just placed an order for the 1/6 scale WB Le Rhone dummy engine kit to use in my 1/5th fokker EIII.
I'm a complete newbie when it comes to plastic kits and don't know the first thing about proper glue or how to apply a realistic fuel resistant finish.
As such I'd really appreciate some pointers as I don't want to mess up this wonderful kit.
I'd like to know how to modify it to give it the appearance of the Oberusel engine used in the original Eindecker.
Also, as it's just slightly to small for my model, I was wondering if there was any way to increase the engine diameter marginally and not spoil the overall scale appearance (perhaps add a thin section to the cylinders?)
Ideally I would be aiming for something like Abufletcher's immaculate rendition of the Oberursel.

Trev, that's the same kit I used. The first step was to increase the length of the cylinders and the Le Rhone cylinders look somehow short and stubby compared to old photos of the Oberursal. I did this by cutting strips of .020 styrene and wrapping them around the part of the black cylinder that would normally go into the crankcase. Then to create a new flange I took a second strip of the same styrene and put that inside the other ring so that it stuck out about 1/8" Next, I glued these new longer cylinders into the two crankcase halves. Next, I glued the back flatter plate (the big one with the nuts) on the front instead of the back. Then, I wanted to replicate the forward plate on the Obersursal so I cut a large hole in this plate and made a another ring of styrene. I used another smaller piece from the back of the motor (that I wouldn't be using) to make the forward plate. Then I ground flat the attachment point for the rocker heads and made new more scale rocker heads out of styrene and a few bits of styrene cover wire. The rocker arms are music wire covering in aluminum tape.

Once it was all done, I dirtied it up a bit with a thin wash of blackish latex and then sprayed it with a couple coats of Minwx Polycrylic. If I could do it all again, I'd try to get a shinnier metalic finish. I used Metalizer Steel but I guess I didn't really prime the surface well enough to get a really good shine.

Oh and I used that brush on plastic solvent for glue. That and a bit of CA on the rocker heads.

Trev, I am also a total newbie with styrene. Never ever used the stuff before this. But it's pretty easy to work with. I'd love to see what one of the plastic modellers would have been able to do. Mine would no doubt be crude by comparison.

PS. On the maiden flight the dummy won't be going along. I still haven't been able to figure out a solid way to mount it. Any suggestions?

Dear Trev:

The PIPE here once more...and IF you're looking for documentation to make a REALISTIC dummy rotary engine for YOUR E III Eindecker, and CANNOT find ANYTHING regarding the Oberursel U I 100 PS engine it used for power...

...just look for ANYTHING on the 100 PS Gnôme MONOSOUPAPE rotary engine, AND YOU'LL BE ALL SET!!!

This is because, JUST like the Oberursel U 0 80 PS seven cylinder rotary (Umlaufmotor to Deutsch-speakers out there) in the early Fokker M.5K/MG (5 of which were built) and E I production Eindeckers being an exact copy of the 80 PS Gnôme Lambda seven cylinder rotary used in the early Bristol Scout C aircraft, the Oberursel U I is an exact copy of the 100 PS Gnôme Monosoupape rotary!

Here's what LEO OPDYCKE at the WW I AERO quarterly periodical has available for 100 PS Gnôme Monosoupape rotary engine info in his "Master Materials List" at http://www.ww1aeroplanesinc.org/docs/engines.htm ...

"Gnome 100hp
*GNOME MONO INSTRUCTION BOOK., 240pp. $40 fr WW1 AERO.
*HANDBOOK ON THE 100 HP GNOME. HMSO, 1915. 47pp, $15 fr WW1 AERO.
*SCHEDULE OF SPARE PARTS, 1920. Lists, dwgs, specs. 15pp, $12 fr WW1 AERO.
*AIR BOARD TECH NOTES, 1918,17pp. $7 fr WW1 AERO.

And Leo can be reached at:

Leo Opdycke
15 Crescent Road
Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 USA

...with his phone number being at 1-845-473-3679 !!!

Also, "Aeroplane Books" has a reproduction of the "Air Board Technical Notes-Engine Notes" available for US $16.95 which DOES include info on the 100 PS Gnôme Monosoupape rotary engine...the webpage where I found THAT book is at http://www.aeroplanebooks.com/technical_pg1.htm ....with THAT manual, or with what Leo Opdycke has available, you SHOULD have ALL the info you'll be needing to build up the GERMAN CLONE of the 100 PS Gnôme Monosoupape rotary...the OBERURSEL U I, that the Fokker E III Eindecker used!

And an UPDATE on this post...since first writing this reply earlier on Sunday, I DID find some "Oberursel-specific" info for you...I've attached TWO images, one of an Oberursel U I in a museum, and the OTHER being a CROSS SECTIONAL drawing of the Oberursel U I in side view...the BORE of that engine's cylinders is supposed to be 120 mm, so you can use THAT to create a scale for THAT drawing!

Hope this reply is of SOME use to you...!

Yours Sincerely,

The PIPE!

Pipe, man I wish I had had this when I was finishing up my dummy! But I'm wondering about the black cylinders on the museum reproduction. The old photos give the impression that the cylinders were bright and shiny rather than the factory black of later engines. I darkened the cylinders on my dummy a bit just because I figured they get grimy pretty fast. But here's a shot of the engine of the EIII in the London muesum and they look black here. But then maybe that's something the museum people did.

And here are a couple of shots of the engine in the San Diego replica which Achim at Fokker Team Schorndorf says is an American copy and different from the German version is a number of small ways, such as the shape of the rocker heads.
