Hey Josh,

Please suggest how I can balance my spiner. It's aluminum and clearly not balanced. Should I ligth sand it? Add weight?? It's a big spinner and I don't want to mess it up. It cost me like 90 bucks.

I have no idea, I bought the plane already with it, but then my friend that saw it told me that they cost like 90 -100 bucks. It's awesome and extremely light.

look in the back of the cone. on the inside, at the front of the cone, if it is tru-turn it will be stamped there.

Freddy that backing plate looks like its bent some.

From what i was told on how to balance a spinner. it should sit at 3:00 & 9:00 just like you have it. and it sholud balance at 12:00 & 6:00 also.

the spinner cone is bucklingtoo. forget balancing it, get a new spinner. that is dangerous. remember, aluminum fateauges, so you dont want to fly it with a backplate and a cone like that one. here's a tip for spinners with lightened backplates. only tighten them as much as you wan with your pinky. i know it sounds like disaster, but if the spinner is any good, it will have a friction locking system such as that on the truturn spinners, so a pinky is tight enough. I dont think it is a truturn though because of the shape of the cutouts. truturns dont use that flower-pedal shaped cutout for lightening the spinner. if i am not mistaken, that is one of the airwild nova spinners. check this out. http://www.airwildpilotshop.com/MoreInfo-1.asp?title=product&id=158

also, a balanced spinner should balance in any attitude you put it at. if it's balanced, that means the forces on each side are equal, so it should not matter if it's 3:00, 4:00, or whatever you may, it should balance.

Why I do is add epoxy and sawdust to the light side a little at a time to balance
You have to balance the spinner and backplate together. Doing them seperately is difficult. Just make sure that you put them back the same each time.

Hey Freddy,

Enjoyed meeting you here in Ft Worth. Hope to see you again next season.

I have to agree, unless that's an optical illusion, I don't think you're problem is balance, but rather your spinner and backplate are damaged to badly to repair. Also , Tru-turn is adamant that they don't want you to balance their spinners. However.......if you really want to, here is how to do it:

Balance the backplate first. I use a rotary file on the heavy side, although adding epoxy to the light side is just fine too. Once the backplate is perfect, couple the cone and backplate together and balance them as an assembly. That is the only way to keep the cone aligned while you balance it. I had to cut an extra long rod to reach through the whole assembly. Adding epoxy is the only feasible way of balancing the cone. Add a clump to the light inside of the cone.

When it's perfect, break the cone and plate apart, and reseat them in a different orientation (spin the cone about 90 degrees relative to the backplate). Recheck the balance with this orientaion and they should be perfect again.

You will never be able to balance a bent or cracked spinner. I know it hurts sometimes having to trash one.......I lost 4 last year for different reasons.

Good Luck! CJ
