Got my Aeroworks Katana. Their method to hold the wings on are to drill and tap a hole through the bottom of the wing, through the wing tube. Then run secure the wing and tube with a bolt......from the bottom of the wing. Well needless to say, what a pain.

Has anyone made any mods to any other foam/balsa sheeted wings, that would allow you to secure the wings from inside the fuse? I was thinking about running some 1/4 20 all tread into the wing root for about 3 or 4 inches and build up the fuse where the rod would go though, secure with nut.

Any thoughts on this.

the method you are thinking would work great it take very little to hold wings on i sometimes drill that 1/4-20 nylon bolt and run a cotter pin on there also

IMO, drilling holes anywhere in the wing tube is a bad idea. Out toward the ends has been a standard practice for some manufacturers but I think securing the wing roots to the fuse is a much better method. Blind nuts secured into the wing roots is a common method along with beefing up the fuse sides where the bolts fasten.

I had the same problem on my AW 35% 300 Extra. In fact after one 3D flight I landed and the wing was an inch from the fuse as the hard point tore loose from the wing. To solve the problem I purchased a fastner from the local hardware store that is 1/4 machine on one end and a lag (wood compatable) on the other end. I simply glued the lag end into the wing with epoxy; added reenforcement to the fuse and all has been well since. I fly hard 3d and have had no problems. I attach the wing with a wing nut and a regular washer (no lock washer) and they are never loose even after a day of flying. Good luck Ed

I made a half circle and glued a blind nut in and epoxied the crap out of it into the wing tube! Of coruse the wingtube is tapped too. This held up aweosme and shows no sign of failing

Anything you attach to the wing root only needs to be long enough to penetrate the thickness of the root rib, the fuse, and any reinforcement added.

This is my solution to wing anchor bolts. These guys scrwed into the root of the wing, are flush and accept a 4-20 nylon bolt. Two per wing. Possible overkill, but very light weight.

Used Gorilla Glue. The nut digs real good into the root of the wing. That should hold the wing on. Just hate the wing attachement bolts that are under the wing!

I hated the way the wing went on my aeroworks extra, so when I got the katana I used dubro threaded brass inserts set in a piece of 1\2 inch dowel epoxied in the root of the wing. Then reinforce the inside of the fuse where the retaining screw is.
Got the idea from flyinrazorback here on RCU.
I havn't flown it yet
Looks like it will work

If you go to Desert Aircrafts web sight you will see the hold downs he sells. They might seem expensive but are well worth the price. You use these instead of alignment dowls. I have them on my Aeroworks extra with over 150 flights they work great.

The Aeroworks method is so universally recommended for several reasons:

1. It is very lightweight - whatever other methods you come up with, it's hard to beat the weight of a couple of tiiny screws.

2. Strength - the two screws, however tiny, provide more than enough shear strength to keep the wings from sliding off the tube

3. Forced tight fit - drawing the aluminum tube spar tight against the wing phenolic (or fiberglass) tubes gets rid of any loose fit, and provides more friction, between the spar and tube to guard against any minute sliding of the spar inside the tube. Securing the root rib to the fuselage sides won't give you that.

One common trick to make this attachment method less of a PITA is to glue a half-round piece of plywood/spruce inside the alumninum spar where the bolts will attach. This way, you can drill right through the aluminum and tap into the wood instead.

If you do decide to bolt the root rib to the fuselage sides, pay attention to the fuselage sides too. Depending on the particular model, the fuselage sides to where you bolt the wing panels may have too many lightening holes cut into them. You will be putting stresses on glue joints that weren't designed to take any lateral loads. You may have to reinforce the fuselage as well as the wing panels.

Hey Talon 58 Im sorry. Since DA changed their site they no longer show them. If you look under accessories they list them as anti rotation studs. If you look at the setup on a composite arf it is the same.
