I use to use a gel cell battery in my field box but it was hard to charge and did not go a great job for me all the time so when i built a bigger field box I bought a lawn mower battery and I love it. I can come in and toss the lawn mower battery on a charger and its ready fast and It has a lot of power to spin my starter.

What type of battery do most of you guys use?

gel cell or other type?

Gel Cell! I fly four to five days a week, and charge my gel cells about every two weeks with a Yuasa Automatic Charger.

12V 7AH Gel cell in my main box - never had a charge problem. I also use a "carry pak" consisting of a Sullivan Tork Master starter and a 12V 4AH gel cell. Use the same charger on that one too.

But I must say my starter batteries don't get much of a workout. I fly Saito 4 strokes and gasoline engines - choke the Saitos until wet, flip the spinner backwards and they are running. With my gas engines - choke until wet, then about five flips and they are running. Single flip of the prop on both type engines after they are warmed up and they are running. My gel cells primarily run my fuel pumps and act as a source for my Dymond quick charger and hot shot charger.

Nicads!!!

I have 12 sub Cs strapped to my starter, a six pack of AA (surplus cell phone pack for about $3), and a single nicad glow lighter. It's a lot easier to carry and no lines to the box for starting. Got a Dymond Turbo to charge them all on the way to the field.

Howzat,
Joel

I use a 12v lawn tractor battery from Wally World, plenty of juice for anyone's starter at the field. It powers all my selection of chargers also, and didn't cost an arm and a leg. When I return home from flying I just plug in my Battery Tender and the next time I'm ready to fly it's all charged up and ready to go.

I use a Yausa 12v 7Ah battery in by starter box and I carry a Yausa 12V 18Ah as reserve power. I have three of them. I use to work for a company that mfg UPS's and these were out of date batteries that could not be sold as new. Yuasa make a very good battery but I do not thank they make Gel Cells. The batteries that are commonly called Gel Cells are in fact not gel cells. The material between the plates internally looks much like blotting paper and all of the electrolite is absorbed into this material during the initial charging of the battery. There is no gel material in the batteries. Just good old Sulfuric acid and H2O.
A company called Globe use to mfg a gel cell. I have one of their original chargers. Gel cells required a constant voltage charger. The gel cell design was not very successful. The chargers we use are constant current chargers. This is what is needed for a lead acid battery.

I currently have a 12V, 4 AH, Yuasa gel cell in my field box. It is usually only used for my fuel pump but occasionally used for a quick field charge. My starter has two 1500 mAH car packs velcroed to the bottom. Two glow starters adorn the front of my box-one 1700mAH sub-C and one 2300mAH C.
I use a 12V constant power supply in the back of my truck to supply my two SuperNovas with power when I charge anything on the way to the field.

The two car packs and the 4AH gel cell sure did lighten my field box! I have another 4AH, a 7AH, an 18AH Simplex battery, and a deep cycle marine battery in my basement for those 'exception' times .

Many people at the field haul either a large deep cycle or a lawn & garden tractor battery to the flight line.

The 7AH gel cells are fine for general use and starting engines up to .60 cu. in. in displacement. Usually for larger engines and field charging a larger battery is necessary.

I used a battery from a Harley, but with these small batteries, you replace them every year/year and a half. At 30 bucks a pop, I found a small 12v lawn tractor battery at 20 bucks is cheaper, last for 3 to 5 years, and I only have to charge it twice to three times a year IF you don't use a field charger. They will eat up a battery fast, and I fly 3 times a week all day long, year around.
It won't fit in your standard flight box but it works great

I use a 12 volt 7.2AH gel battery. My first battery had issues. I began keeping it charged on my trips to and from the flying field. I have a power hookup in my truck. Since I have been doing that, I have not had a problem.

I noticed some of you say your battery dont last very long. A 12v acid battery likes to stay peak charged. Letting them run down for extended periods and then charging them is hard on them. Also keep them off of cement floors, keep them on a wood board or elevated. Something about leaving them on the concrete that sucks the life out of them. My best luck with the sealed 7amp batteries is to charge them a least twice a month or more. They wont get a memory pattern like NiCads.
Charge on..............

With my trailer I have an on board deep cycle 600 cranking amp marine battery that I use to charge my TX/RX batteries with and in my field box I use the typical Hobbico field battery gel cell 7ah. On the way to the field I use the marine battery to charge my planes/radios and the gel cel is only used to power my field starter. As far as charging both batteries I also have my trailer equipped with 110v AC so I can plug it into the house and use a 10 amp regular charger for the marine battery and the wall wart for the gel cel. I have my trailer equiped with AC recipticle for pluging into the house and I have a cig lighter and banna plug's for connected to 12 volt. I transformed a computer power supply so as to give me 12 volts while using the 110 AC from the house.
