If the Vikes left that wouldn't give us Packer fans anyone to make fun of... I suppose we could use the BEARS but that's almost too easy...

Still behind schedule, but look to be ok in finishing in time. Tested the Red pigment last night, and I really could not tell a difference in strength so I gave it a shot.

Joined everything up and the molds are clamped to the work table until morning when I will probably pop it just to peak before work.

I used more microballoons and less colladial silica on this one, and hope that will help with weight.

Added another 2 hours to my time in fitting the internals, mixing the glue, and joining.

Up to 7 hours 15 minutes. Not to bad actually, its just not as enjoyable as putting one of my fuze kits together....

Popped it out this morning, should have waxed the flanges better (or used less glue) took a little more work getting it out of the mold, but not too bad. TE is better, but I'm still using too much glue back there. This paint I'm using is just not that opaque, and some of my markings on the rohacell are showing through the paint. I got a few voids over my hinge line on top, not sure if I didn't use enough bag pressure, or it was a sloppy layup??

Should be able to clean up the edges tonight, and cut the ailerons free (I love that part).

Another 1/2 hour this morning, upping me to 7 hours 45 minutes.

Another hour this evening, up to 8 hours 45 minutes as I cleaned up the edges, and cut the aileron gaps. The hinges are stiffer than I would like, but seem ok. I had a seam come loose on one wing tip, but I glued that up. This wing came out pretty good. Not where I would like to see them, but will definately be airworthy. The TE is getting thinner, and I think I can get it down even further with more practice

There really is a learning curve to this stuff, but I'm hanging in there. At this point, I still believe my Balsa/foam wings are cleaner, but I need to crank out a few more wings...

Weight of this wing is 1 lb 2.8 oz, so they are still heavy. I know I am using too much glue on my spars, and know I can cut back there. I am hesitant to cut back on the seam glue, as I have had seams come loose on the past two wings.

The red pigment looks ok, but it is not as stiff as resin alone. I think I will stop using it untill I get things worked out. I had it chip out in a couple places when cutting out the ailerons.

I have a question hopefully someone can help me with. I am having opacity issues putting paint down alone, would it make sense to lightly spray with primer after I paint the molds?

Primer's heavy, and just more paint to mix. Jim Allen and myself normally just shoot a light coat of white behind any colors that tend to show through. Although all of our scheme's have white in them, so we don't need to mix another color. Something else to consider is you probably aren't really laying down as much paint as you normally do, so it probably wouldn't be that big of a deal to spray a little more of each of the colors....Not having 100% opacity isn't a bad thing, it's light. I've never seen molded wings that were yellow, orange, red, etc that were 100% opaque.

I like to draw marks on my rohacell with a sharpie for locations of spars, centerline, etc... I also use some carbon fabric on the top over the wing bolt holes. All of these markings, including the CF laminate on the spar can be seen very easily.

I try and put more paint down on the next one, and avoid the heavier primer.

Thanks,

Had a small disaster over the weekend. On the 4th flight (first with a Nelson) the wing leading edge opened up and basically blew apart destroying Jerry's plane. I had problems with the previous wings leading edge coming loose also, so now I got a dilemna. I will not use the pigment any more, but I think my main problem is that I sanded too much on the LE and cut the outter layer of glass exposing rohacell.

If anyone has any hints on how to sneak up on that LE without sanding too much, I would love to here it. It may just be my excitement that I am nearly done. Or, is it possible that taking it out of the mold in 12-15 hours is not long enough? Should I leave it for a full 24 or longer??

Also, I am using Pro-Set Epoxy (same that Chuck Bridge uses) to join the edges. Any hints on the ratio of glue to cab-o-sil for joining?

Dave,

I realize you are trying to get your wings light, but I would err on the side of caution at this point and make it more robust. One option is to lay an extra strip of cloth on the leading edge area if you feel you are damaging it. Are you leaving a flange of glass before joining the wing halves? I would join the wings with a mixture of milled fiber (yes, weight) and some cabosil. This should be stronger. You might also consider building a "dam" to beef up the leading edge. A 1/16" strip of balsa located about 1/8" back from the LE would help keep epoxy bonded to the surfaces. The more surface area of bond you have, the better you are.

If you don't want to post it, that's ok, but a picture of the inside of your wings after being built would help to look at.

Michael
