I have a 1/8 pylon midget mustang.
I have no landing gear on it because I thought I could hand launch it and belly land it. The hand launch part goes off OK but the landing is a disaster. It ends up nosing in and flipping over. It has the radiator scoop on the belly that interferes with a smooth belly landing. Removing the scoop would be too much work.
Does anyone have any ideas for a skid or a landing gear that would work?
What did they use for a landing gear when they raced these in events?

Thanks,
Pat

When 1/4 midget was an event the airplanes had a proper landing gear. They had an aluminum LG mounted at the front of the wing at the root position. We had to use 1 1/4dia wheels.

Maybe a little bizzare but how about a wire skid that loops from the nose back to the scoop, it would prevent the scoop from digging in.

Thanks for the info Ed.
I don't know how many years have gone by since 1/4 midget was an event but I wasn't able to find any information about the landing gear at all. The older guys at the club just barely remember the airplanes. I did see a picture of a small racer with wire gear and plastic wheels but I'm flying from sod and I know the small wheels will not roll in the grass, and I don't want anything hanging in the breeze to slow it down.
I'm going to try to attach a wire skid to the motor mount, back to the belly scoop. If it doesn't work I guess I'll be looking for a .15 size 3D airplane.

How long ago has it been since 1/4 midget was an event?

QM15 was last flown at the US Nationals in 1993.. in 1994 QM40 started and has since became the premier event in the US...

Pat,

Best thing to do is punch a hole through the bottom of the fuselage at the centerline, at the bottom of the firewall, and run a 3/32" or 1/8" steel wire "whip" skid up through the hole and behind the engine mount, then left or right 90 degrees to keep the skid from rotating. Use the engine mount to clamp the skid in place. (You'll need to cut a channel in the firewall, or add a slotted 1/8" ply plate to the front of the firewall, to accomplish this.)

The "Club 20" event, flown in England and Canada for most of the past 30 years, uses airplanes very similar to the .15 Quarter Midget models, but powered with .20s using tuned mufflers. They have always been hand-launched, with skids as described above ... or more often they're midwing designs with tough fiberglass fuselages, designed for belly-landing.

Guys,
The information is appreciated.
I going to bend up a wire skid and see if it will do the job.
