I put down 5 coats of wax between last night and today. Lets just say, my arm is sore.

I thought I would spray some PVA on my molds to see how it would work, unfortunately, I made a mess. The PVA did not lay down well at all, it puddled up and I had bubbles everywhere.

Anyone got any ideas on how to put this down better?

I thinned the PVA with 1 part water, and 1 part Alcohold, to 1 part PVA per the instructions on the back of the PVA.

If anything, I think I sprayed it on too thick.

Hi Dave,

My experience shows that if it pools up, then the wax is incompatible with the PVA. However, the dolphin wax should be fine with PVA

Or, in your case, you applied the PVA too thick. Surprisingly enough, the PVA should be put on in really thin coats and it will appear dry within a few seconds. It actually will surprise you into thinking that there is no PVA on the surface. Personally, I use a foam brush to put it on and have achieved good results.

Welcome to the learning curve of molding.

Michael

I've also used a small 4 oz. spray gun. Makes for a nice even smooth surface. I've found using a brush leaves strokes in the PVA and it will show up on the part surface. No real biggy though, just a light sanding takes them out.

I got up early this morning and decided to give it another go.

I put a very fine mist coat on each mold half and waited about 15 minutes.

I then tried to put a heavier coat on one half of the mold and had the same results as last night (a mess)

On the other half of the mold, I slowly misted on 3 more coats and it looks pretty good. Not perfectly smooth, but I think acceptable for the first coat. My only concern, is there really doesn't appear to be much PVA on there. Do you think 3 light coats is enough???

All of the waxing will make you a better pusher! Keep at it.

As to the PVA you should be able to pick at a corner and pull up a little bit, it should be like a very thin Glad wrap. Sounds like you are spraying to heavy plus you might try higher pressure, and lower volume, more of a mist than a spray.

I, too, tried thinning PVA with water to spray and had bad luck. Straight from the bottle worked best but dull and orangepeally. I think methanol would be a better thinner, but haven't tried it. Rudy

Hi All

Just as a matter if additional information.

On the PVA spray, direct from page 43 from the 2004-2005 Aircraft spruce supply catalog, they recommend the following to spray PVA.

On a mold that already has wax on it, atleast 3 layers:

"We recommend using an inexpensive automotive siphon spray gun and 70-90 psi for application, although airbrush will work on hobby size projects. It should be applied in 3 thin mist coats. Typically after 5 min ,the heavier final coats can be added. The PVA dries to a form a smooth glassy film."

Now, remember, not as glassy as a waxed and polish mold surface without PVA though. And they don't thin it. I use a foam brush to apply a thin layer on a seasoned mold. But!! I'm not looking for a final finish out of the mold.

hope this helps

Steve
