I was starting my engine breakin and found that I couldn't get the LST to move in either the hi or low gear selector knob setting. After more twisting I finally got it to go in low briefly before the truck stopped moving again. Now no matter what I do the truck doesn't move under power. I took it back to my LHS and they couldn't get it to work either. I left it there and won't know anything until their nitro "guru" gets a chance to look at it on Monday. Bummer...

Anyone else having trouble with their Hi/Low gear range selector knob?

I've not had troubles with this.

The mechanism for shifting into high/low is the exact same as that used to shift into reverse so as you'll note it only moves a few degrees each way. Maybe the spring used to hold it in high/low is broken and thus lets it float back to the middle position of neutral. I can't really help though without physically taking a look at it, hopefully the guru coming in knows what he's doing and has seen the LST before.

Inside the tranny there is a prong that holds the gear selector in either high or low gear, depending on the high/low selector position. My guess is that the prong is broken off (it's small and plastic) or that you have twisted it too far in one direction to where the prong is no longer seated around the shift shaft.

I realize that is a confusing explanation, but you would know what I mean if you've ever taken the tranny apart .

try adjusting your slipper... tighten it up about a 1/4 of a turn.. then once you start leaning the engine out you should be fine!

At my LHS they removed the gear selector knob (which just seemed to spin around) and tried to change the hi/low setting with a pair of needle nose pliers. They were briefly able to get the truck to drive in low range but it wouldn't stay. The slipper is set to one turn out and the clutch housing is spinning fine with the engine revved up, but no movement of the truck. So it must be something with the transmission. Thanks for all your thoughts.

one turn out is the factory setting for a tuned engine! when you are breaking it run the slipper just about 1/4 tighter.. just give it a try.. your not going to hurt anything.. i had the same problem.. the truck didnt want to move during break-in..

The knob holds the selector in place with a spring & the 2 little square points on the bottom of the knob.you need to pull straight up on the knob then turn to the gear you want, then push down making sure the square points are in their slots. If this was completely off the truck then it wont stay engaged in either hi or low.On page 9 & 19 of the operations guide it shows this part,if it is broken call bill at losi and tell him,i'm sure he'll help you out.Good luck and keep us posted.

Btw i run my slipper at the factory 1 turn setting.

My slipper came from the factory at almost 2 turns out and I was able to break mine in like that. I doubt it's the slipper.

You're gonna have to take the tranny apart (or have your LHS do it) and take a look around in there to see what's malfunctioning.

My LHS (Walt's in Syracuse) reassembled the gear selector and all its parts (there's a lot of pieces to that little knob) and now my hi/low function works fine. They just warned me not to turn it too far one way or the other, and to make sure the locator tab is in one notch or the other. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Ya, that's what I was talking about. If it twists too far, the prong can lose it's seating on the shift shaft.

I think I'm having a similar issue. I will rebuild my gear selector and check the transmission housing tonight. I can get it to go a little in low gear. Can't get it to do anything in high.
