When re-assembling the 58CD, are there alignment marks somewhere on the components or a method to ensure proper piston position in relation to port position? I had to open my engine and found that the inside ball race had been rotating in the crankcase castings.

Hi

To reassemble your engine, ensuring the gears are engaged in the correct position so that it is timed correctly you need to :
1)carefully remove any bearing lock material from the back bearing and the crankcase halves
2) assemble the crankshaft piston assy in the reverse order
3)take the cylinder jacket and rotate the cylinder until the cylinder port is equally visible in the exhaust and inlet ports
4)insert to cocktail sticks (or similar) into the exposed segments of the port to lock the cylinder in position. Insert the piston into the cylinder bore and engage the gears in such a way that the piston is at top dead centre checking that the crankshaft webb is horizontal
5) apply a small amoun of bearing lock onto each bearing and assemble the bottom half of the crankcase with the six screws. Do not over tighten these screws
6) remove the cocktail sticks

I hope this helps. If you have any more problems, please let me know
Best regards
Laurenne

Laurenne... While I didn't start this thread, I've been following along. I've got about 8 hours run time on my .58 in an Hangar 9 trainer. I must say I've really had a blast with this combination. I never fly this engine without folks coming over to have a look. My impression is that folks are really interested in a good flying engine that is off the beaten path. Today I spent 45 min putting around on 8 oz of fuel sitting in a lawn chair in the shade! It was the perfect relief from my 90 heli on a 100 deg day.

Since I do have some time on this motor I decided to "have a look" inside. I should have left it alone. All was perfect! I'll post some pictures soon.

In re-timing the motor I read your instructions but in doing it, it looked like the timing might be between two teeth. I could not get the cylinder port to exactly split the exhaust and inlet ports. In step 3 of the setup instructions would you say it is biased towards more port showing on the exhaust or the inlet side.... or it it truly exactly split?

Thanks for your time,

Bill Vail

Hi Bill

I am pleased to hear that you are enjoying your RCV58CD engine.

With regard to retiming, sometimes you cannot get it to be exact, when this happens it is better to bias towards to exhaust.

I hope this helps.
Best regards
Laurenne

That is, slightly more of the cylinder port might be visible through the exhaust port than the intake port. Right?
