I did know how to fly before I tried out the B-17. I did build a C-47 from tropflite and flew it for a summer before the bomber was finished.

The outboard tanks are behind the fire wall. The inboard tanks are in the wing beside the nacelles. I am not using pumps on the engines.

That is impressive. First twin was a C-47 then right to the B-17!
Great job!

Thanks for the info on tank location. I have been flying for a long time, at present I am flying Ducted fans and Gaint scale. Is there a multi engine plane I should fly first or is the B-17 a good start. I did have a Hobico Twin that was not impressive. Thanks for all the help Tom.

I am getting ready to start The American Eagle B-17. You may want to consider Magnum 70 4 strokes. I just ordered 4 of them. I have 3 of their 61 4 strokes and they run great. I have 2 of them on a 3 engine and have never had one go out. The 70's are on sell right now from Global. I paid $135 each. The AE b-17 will fly well on this even at the 50 lbs. The lightest one of the AE B-17's has come in at is 35lbs...So I am shooting for 40LBS...

The more and more I "plan" I'm leaning towards the RCV .90's in order to reduce the amount of cowl cutting to a minimum. I'm trying to make this plane as scale as possible.

If you are looking at possibly gas engine, you might consider the RCS 1.4 it would fit the Don Smith but would most likely be to large for the American Eagle. The American Eagle size you should probably stay with 2 ro 4 stroke glow engine. Anyway the 1.4 is considereably smaller and lighter than a G-23. Not much larger than a .91 four stroke and with the carb in back makes a slinder package. It does have electronic ignition. The only draw back is probably the price.

hi Guys,

have a look at my home page and you will be astonished how little power a RC B-17 model needs for "scale" flying!! even with 2 cut-off engines!

www.home.versatel.nl/jan.hermkens/

My B-17 models: Both build from own plan.

Scale 1:10: Span;124". Weight;35 pound. Engines;4x0.40 Osmax FSR 2-stroke. 2x National champion.

Scale 1:8: Span;158". Weight;44 pound. Engines;4x 0.70 Laser 4-stroke. 4x European Star Cup champ.

Cheers,

Jan Hermkens, Netherlands (the flying Dutchman)

All I have to say is SAITO, I have 105 flights on my don smith B-17. I might also add that all landings were completed with all four engines running every time. I am building Don's liberator right now and will power it with Saito's.

Wes

I fly my Herk with 4 Saito .30's and it flies very well. However it is not over powered and climb out is very realistic. Total weight fueled up right at 22#'s

Hi, Junior 55
I fly my B-17 (build from own plan, span 4m=158" ) with only 4x Laser 0.70 (13x6 M.A.prop) and it is flying real scale. Even on two engines, did happen once! made a touch and go on three engines, but soon after that the second one cut off, did fly to long, fuel was gone! I could keep the model in the air with the two remaining engines, could not get height anymore, but keep on flying without losing height, Perfect landing!

My favorite engines are the Laser four stroke from the UK. I have only them!
4x 0.70 in my B-17 (Over 400 flights, 1x cut-off engine). From own plan: span 158" .Weight:44 pound.
1x 0.70 in a Harvard. (span 60" ) . Weight 6,5 pound.
2x 2.40 V-twin in my P-61(over 150 flights, never cut-off ).From own plan.Span: 122". Weight:41 pound.
1x 2.40 V-twin in my Corsair (span 80" ). Weight 18 pound.
1x 2.40 V-twin in my Waco YMF (span73" ). New, did not fly yet, only finished it last november.
Junior, there are two types colour Olive drab: Light olive drab, and the more green one: Olive Drab 41 used for the B-17, and there is the colour Medium green 42, but not used for B-17 as far as I know.

Good luck with your B-17.
Have a look at my homepage for my R/C scale models: www.home.versatel.nl/jan.hermkens/

I am going to use O.S. .91 4-stroke pumped engines on my DS B17. I contemplated engined for the longest time and decided on the OS engines for sound, size and weight. My second choice was Zen G26's or G23's if you can find them.

The Pumped .91 has no fuel draw problems, it works just like a gas engine... the pummp draws fuel from the tank. It doesn't pressurize the tank and then you have problems with tanks bursting, lines blowing off, etc.. Very simple, one line to the pump on the engine and a vent line from the tank hangs out the bottom of the nacelle. Use one tank per engine. The OS 91 can turn MA 14-7's 3 blade but it flys better with the 12x8 3blade.
