VELOX REVOLUTION II .60
World Models
ARF KIT

The World models ARF kit has been a pleasure to build. Their pull-pull rudder control was an added plus although I did not trust the provided cable clamps. I added split shot sinkers modified to fit the cable. The "real" wheels mentioned in the Fly R/C review were not real in my kit. They were foamies. The wing tube when slipped into the right wing to the stop as instructed did not reach the same distance into the left wing. I also found certain parts of the fuselage not properly glued. In general, though, I am satisfied with what I paid for. Nice job on the covering and the painted fiberglass cowl and wheel pants were a near perfect match. Supplied Carbon Fiber landing gear looks great. There is plenty of room inside the fuse to mount electronics and the hardware (except for the mentioned cable clamps) is a good quality. The .91 Magnum 4 stroke almost fit completely under the cowl. It was necessary to cut out a small section to allow room for the over head valve cap. They included an anti-vibration engine mount that seemed like a neat deal at time of assembly but engine movement is causing exhaust vibration problems. I continue to work on this.

FLYING. First day at the field Wes(club President) performed a field check on the VELOX and after an extensive shakedown took her up for the first time. 2 or 3 clicks of up elevator and the Velox Revolution II was in flying trim. He took time to explain my questions and made some initial mixture settings to keep the Magnum running at low idle. Wes took the airplane through the paces, loops, rolls, inverted, various maneuvers and even knife edge. A smile remained on my face throughout. He also brought her in for a beautiful 3 point landing. (2 or 3 of them)

My first stint at the controls was as much as I had hoped. Straight solid feel. This airplane is very predictable during take off and landing. After a few more flights---- Rolls fast or slow. Inverted flight feels just like upright and as the four stroke breaks in the power range is increasing. The basic aerobatic maneuvers are second nature to the Velox. The model has oversize control surfaces operated by Futaba S3004 servos which in turn are powered by a Futaba 6 volt hump battery pack. This initiates a quick, rock solid response. The model is controlled by a Futaba T6XA PCM computer radio. The slow and fast roll capability due, of course, to proper exponential settings and dual rates.

I have noticed some slight hairline cracking at the bend of the Carbon Fiber landing gear but strength has not been affected to date. The one problem is attaching an exhaust extension long enough to reach out at the aft section of the cowl. Vibrations------- I have been too stubborn to shorten the pipe and cut a hole down through the cowl.

All in all this is a very enjoyable model to assemble and breeds confidence in the air.

During the first 43 flights the new VELOX has performed beyond my expectations. I have found no bad habits or tendencies. During a flight battling a twelve to seventeen mph crosswind the engine stalled (pressure tube to tank came off). I had to bring the airplane in for it's first dead stick landing. The Velox handles well after flame-out! I was able to glide her in to a safe three point landing. The strong crosswind blowing away from our field made it very interesting gliding in to touch down. I just made it to the runway as the VELOX settled to land. I felt no loss of control and the wings remained level.

See you at the field,

ROSS

Hey Ross,

Glad you had a good experience with the plane. I must say there may be variations in the assembly, so it would behove one to check out the contents before purchase. Here are some other opinions on the build. Plane does fly nicely though.

I had to remove part of the covering off the wing. Found that all of the shear webs have only been glued at the ends, so the centers are floating! Also, every other bay didn't have any webbing, this may be a design choice however.

UPDATE: and thanks for the reply

The VELOX REV II .60

Reading the reviews and ideas I probably would not have purchased this airplane. In this case I am pleased I bought it before the negative stuff came out. YES it is fragile, it is also very light for the size. There were many interesting and some frustrating obstacles to work out. Some are ongoing. Discussion helps me solve the glitches.

BUT

This is ONE REAL CLEAN FLYING airplane. I still have found NO bad or unusual tendencies. Flies very nice with a .91 four stroke. Fully aerobatic and yet different from the normal aerobats. Flies fast or slow. Comes out of maneuvers quickly and predictably.

I am beginning to think the fliers who are speaking of problems are genius. They don't want anyone else to have one!

A 1.08 2 stroke will replace the .91 four stroke this season. May change engine mounts.

Watching it Snow,

ROSS
