I am interested in the Ziroli A-1 Skyraider as my next project. I hear the A-1 was a great flier. Plus I love ground attack planes!

Has anyone built this kit? How does it fly? What did you power it with?

I am ready to move up into bigger warbirds. I am currently flying a TopFlite SNJ-3 (AT-6). It has a 60" wingspan.

Would the Skyraider be that much harder to fly?

I have a Dynaflite Chipmunk, 89" ws NIB I was going to build as my next project. Should I build and fly this warbird first or move on up to the Skyraider?

The Ziroli Skyraider is a great flying airplane. It's a very large model in comparison to your Top Flight AT6 and I have both of these planes and the Ziroli AD-1 is the easier of the two to fly.
It has a wide landing gear stance unlike the AT-6 and it has large flaps that are very effective for landing. I would consider the G-62 size engine as the smallest power for this plane. A 4.2 or a 5.8 would be a better choice for power. One of the many new twins like the GT-80 would be another great choice and they offer much reduced vibration when compared with the larger singles. Mine has a 4.2 and it flies well. It's an easy model to dress up with ordinance and drop tanks as well. I have two wing tanks and eight rockets hanging of the bottom of the wing and it really looks loaded for bear with it all in place. The plane is a bit slower with the tanks and rockets but they do not effect the way it flies. I built mine from a kit cut by the Aeroplane Works. The owner of the company Chuck Gill passed away recently but I believe one of his sons is still running the business. They did a really nice job cutting the kit. Everything fit perfectly.

I just test hopped one Wed. night for a friend and it flies like a BIG low wing trainer with flaps and retracts. Great flier!!! I will have one on the board after I finish a couple others i have going now.

I have 2 of the old Global .60 Sandy kits and have seen a couple of the Zirolli Sandy's fly as well. The Global kits are superb fliers----as are the Zirolli's I have seen. I think all Sandys fly well because of the terrific design of the plane-----long tail moment, big tail feathers, and large wing area. My Global Sandy's fly like a Kaos on Prosac-----super "groovy", utterly honest, just not as "frisky" as a pattern plane. Unbelieveable slow speed envelope----absolutley no tendency to tip stall. That's how the Zirolli's fly as well. The Zirolli's I've seen have been powered by 75-100cc engines. I think a G62 would be marginal. They usually weigh 38+lbs. I fly "gasser" aerobatic planes----I'm seriously thinking of building a Zirolli Sandy. Don't think there is a better flying warbird out there,......Warped Wing

WoW! It sounds like a Skyraider is really a great airplane.

I was wondering if I should try something like a Top-Flite Giant Scale P-47 before moving up to the Skyraider. Does this seem wise?

Have you built many kits before? It's gonna help if you have. If not the Top Flight will help you along the way to your goal!!

I have built a GreatPlanes RV-4, Top-Flite AT-6 and a Midwest Extra 300XS.

I am thinking I will build my Dynaflite Chipmunk before trying a Ziroli plane. I have the kit and it should go together fast. Plus I will need to get a trailer to haul the Skyraider around with its 100" ws.

I really like the looks of the Skyraider and hope to build it after the Chipmunk

You can build the Skyraider wing in 3 pieces. Makes it easy for transport.
