That might be a phoenix 5 in the link, but the finished one has the 10cc webra. They look like they were great planes to fly.

Any info appreciated on what they are.

Thanks; Dan Z

Wornboots: Went to your site. It could be a .40 Silver Line as they looked like .61. The larger one will say either .61 or 10cc on side. Had both Black Head .61 & Speed . I think BH was made Germany & Speed in Austria. Never had .40 Webra, was hooked on K&B. My 1974 Tower shows .40 BH @$63.75,.61 BH @$83.00 &.61 Schneurle @ $95.00 ,big bucks in those days!! Back then mufflers were just coming in ,you should have heard comments about them! I ran a Speed at Multi-wing meets in 70`s, had special Kavan carb ,it was very fast but I couldn`t turn good. Still have carb . I now run a Speed .32 ,.50.& 1.20 good chugs ! MAX

I recall flying almost all of the designs being mentioned(my mid 50 age is showing) and I have to say the pre-Phoenix 5 designs, like the Phil Kraft Kwik Fli series, Marabu, Troublemaker, Banshee, Cutlass, Gladiator, etc. were pretty much all based on engines with mufflers, not tuned pipes. An OS .60 Goldhead or Enya III .60 were all you needed for nice performance. One of today's .40 size engines probably has more power. Once you got into the Phoenix series, Tiporare, Curare, Bootlegger, EU1-A, Brushfire, Aurora, etc. it was all short stroke tuned pipe flying for ultimate pattern performance. Getting back to the original question, the Kwik Fly II was a very nice design requiring some rudder input on rolls, but tracked very well when looping. I think Phil Kraft used the basics of the design for the Ugly Stik. George Leu

I'm pretty familiar with Phil Kraft's designs and have plans to most of them. The Kwik Fli Mk I was published in RCM in about 1964. Had about 800 sq. in wing area. The Mk II was smaller with 660 sq. in. wing and about 5-6 lbs. Looked the same as the Mk I but gave more consistent performance on the available engines of that day (Enya .60 II and Veco/K&B .61). The Mark II was kitted by Jensen Enterprises who kitted the ORIGINAL Ugly Stik. If you turn the Kwik Fli Mk II fuse upside down, you have the basic side view and moments for the Stik. The Stik used a larger semi symetrical wing. The Jensen kits were a joy to build as they were among the first really precision machine cut kits. The Mk III Kwik Fli had the same wing as the Mk II with a revised and prettier fuselage. The Mk III was the 1967 World Championship winner and was published in M.A.N.. It was kitted most notably by Top Flite and Graupner. A few others also made glass fuse versions, etc.. The Graupner kit was beautiful and the closest to the original design. All of the Kwik Fli series emphasized light weight and constant speed and had thick symmetrical airfoils. They were easy to build and easy forgiving flyers. The Mk II and Mk III would probably fly great on one of today's .46 size engines. In the 80's, I had a Mk II with an O.S. .61 FSR and it was a real blast to fly with all that extra power!

I have a Tiporare, no way is it for sale! It's a 1990s vintage GP kit.

Gentlemen,

I have a couple of older 60 size engines (ST G60 Bluehead, Webra Blackhead, HB 61 PDP) which I'd like to see in ships of the same era.

Stumbling through a plans listing I have found Joe Bridi's Kaos from 1970 and Phil Kraft's Kwik Fli in original and Mk. III version, the original being the 1967 world champs victor.

Have also found Wolfgang Matt's Super Star from 1969 but must admit I am less keen on the "forward canopy" style which later found its way to Curare and co. type designs.

So gents, your comments and suggestions please! Any other contenders? How do these designs fly? Other considerations?

With thanks,

The Lanier Jester is a great flying 70s vintage aircraft. The first one I had in the 70s was powered by a Veco 61. This is number four.

Hi Everyone;

Don't forget Hal deBolts' designs of the 'ENCORE', Mar 67 RCM, and similar 'CHIEF', ? 67 MAN, and his incomparable 'INTERCEPTER V', from mid 60s MAN, probably the most beautiful of all the pattern designs.

Looks like this thread has been around the block... but I just saw it. Just wanted to let everyone know that Carolina Custom Aircraft is presently kitting 10 of the vintage pattern ships with more in development. I am always looking for some of the classic kits and molds but they are harder and harder to find. If anyone would like a kit availability list/prices please email me at carolinaaircraft@aol.com

Thanks,

deadstik

Isn't there a durability issue with all of that ABS plastic? I had the Lanier Comet in the 70s and the fuse started cracking after just a few flights.
