Jon, In the first gear pic at top, gear was not in full lock. But if you enlarge the 2nd one, and look closely at the bottom of the pivot block relative to the mounting rail, you can see the angle. Lee

Considering that I'm planning on using an 18" prop on my TF Corsair, going with compressing struts will give my prop arc a little less grass to deal with, as it allows for a longer overall strut. I would definitely be interested in getting a set of compressing retracts.

Now if they would work with a mechanical servo it should revolutionize the ARF market. I'm thinking of the H9 Corsair and even the WM P-40. If they can't be built for mechanical linkages then I'll just have to install all the plumbing since the factory mechanicals are terrible. Thanks for you efforts and good luck...

To all:

This might be a borderline commercial but till now it is 99% hobby. I make control modules for my own use and sell them to fellow club members. I have prototyped a landing gear controller for the Corsair I'm building to sequence the doors and wheels. Since there is so much interest here and in other forums in scale gear I am wondering now if other builders might be interested in them. Here is link to a preliminary data sheet for the thing. I would welcome any comments. Landing Gear Controller

Hi Quint; Actually it will be operable with the right servo. The cylinder you see in the proto pic is actually modified from one of my mini-cylinders, typically used for accessory use such as gear doors. Lee

Great! Put me down for the first available set! I've got a Corsair just dying for some help and I have been looking at a Hellcat. Those would be the best things on the market for them.

Lee,

Do you have a target date to start production?

Good morning Jon; First, I tried to click on the url you posted, but got an error msg from Acrobat that addr. was incomplete. When I checked back, I found that the very long url was spread to 2 lines, and you can only highlite one line! So it tried to go to the partial address. It seems like it should have been continuous in wrap-around mode. I'm not expert enough with "confusers" to know how to handle it! But I am interested in purchasing one of your controllers for evaluation. Send me the price and your mailing address, or do you use PayPal? I have been using Canadian Ultra Precision controllers for some years, with good success. But their prices have been going up (whose hasn't??) and I would like an alternative in any case. Single-sourcing makes me nervous!
For the rest of the gang, I may be able to come up with a production date within the next couple of weeks. I'm waiting for a couple of special parts right now so I can put together a close-to-final version. (Notice my careful bet-hedging!!!) But I am quite keyed up on this last mod! I know all too well what Edison meant when he said that invention was 1 % inspiration, and 99% perspiration!!! I am very encouraged and spurred on by the kind comments by many out there. I'm having to do this in among a number of other active orders for the big stuff and some new accessories. I'll try to keep everyone posted as often as possible. Lee Robinson

Bump.

Seeing as the other thread has been locked, thought this should still stay up top.

It would be awesome if the retract mechanisms take either 7/16" or 1/2" diameter RoboStruts directly, similar to Robart 550 series retracts. This way, we can cut the RoboStruts to different lengths to fit different warbirds.

Hi Richard L; I'll have to take a look at the situation. I believe up to 7/16 could work, but when you talk 1/2" struts, you are typically talking about larger and heavier planes. I have geared these to the under 15 lb class typically using the little 615's, which are definitely not candidates for the larger struts! Maybe some others would like to comment on this. BUT-- remember that I build struts to ordered length and sprung to weight! I don't build anything that you have to "cut & paste" to make work! Lee

Lee,
Im currently working on a Bryan Taylor 75" corsair. It will come out at about 17lbs. To my knowledge Earl Aune doesnt make the retracts for it anymore. This one I got at a swapmeet with what looks like rohm-air retracts with 3/16" struts. I'm pretty confident these wont hold up for the long term. It has a foot print about the size of the robarfs 615. Do you think yours would have enough lee way (get it, Lee way, pun intended) to handle a 17lb plane? I would definately like 1/2" struts but would take 7/16" if that was all. This is gonna be an everyday flyer.
