I almost thought I was done for,as yesterdays' tracking said the package was tied up with incorrect information, but I just got this little gem:

Tracking Number: 1Z A12 20E 03 1282 638 5

Type: Package
Status: Delivered
Delivered On: 07/10/2007
1:16 P.M.
Delivered To: WEST PALM BEACH, FL, US
Signed By: ROBINSON
Service: GROUND

With all the delivery headaches, I thought I was due for one of my own.
I failed to leave a note in the box, so,as mentioned in the middle of an above post, the only reason you got one of the gear back was because the air blows by the piston and out the other nipple.
Sounds to me like a super easy fix.

Lee,
Your Feb. Post said that e-mails had gone out to those receiving units and no such e-mail came my way. I have been very patient with all this and have even suggested some of the retoric posted in this thread was overly harsh. At this point I am at a loss. On the one hand I think " well- I've waited over two years whats another two months" and on the other I am kinda sick of all this and think I should demand my money back!!! So Lee, what do you want to do for this very unhappy customer... provide a set of retracts or refund my money. You brag on your customer service..............we will see

Hi Don. Pkg arrived today at 4:30!! Not 1:16! It should have been here yesterday, but they had a screwup and took it to the wrong place! UPS called me last night to verify the address. After delivering to me here for 4 years, they tried to deliver it to my old address, that I left 4 years ago!! They had BOTH addresses in their system yet!!!. It is a simple fix and will be on the way back tomorrow. And BOWMAKER, did you get my email? I know absolutely that I sent that gear, and as I mentioned, it stuck in my mind because of the unusual town name, Schoolcraft. This really baffles me, as I have not had a gear go astray in 30 years, and now, 2 in less than 3 months! I have already replaced Paul Sochockis', and will do so for you. As for my "customer service", I stand by that 30 years, except for the last two! You all don't know even half of what we have gone through in the past 2 years. But I busted my arse, as they say, to get product to everybody. It seemed like everything went to hell as soon as I took on the project. But I will be caught up on even my last group of custom jobs within 4-6 weeks, and won't take orders for new rotators until I have some "on the shelf", AND have the proto 1/5-1/4 scale version done. I may have gotten way behind, BUT-- I have delivered!!! Lee

Lee,
I have not gotten an e-mail from you in over a year. Just in case your records are wrong
bowmaker@comcast.net and has been for over three years. My only contact with you has been via this thread. Lost units are not my problem, sorry but that is the bottom line

well, I hate to say it, but I got the non-funtioning gear back, non-functioning.
I put the ol' airpump to it,and it did open, but only after it hung up, and with much air noise.....it would not retract back.
The air is still leaking by, and the gear themselves seems to get a little pinch along the way to hang it up.

I'll try to get it out to you today for another shot at it.

Edit to say that I got it out before the last pick-up.
I made sure that they got the zip correct this time, and they say you'll have it this thursday.

Don, did you by any chance "hard-tighten" the cylinder? They should be 1/4-1/2 turn loose, which allows a bit of self-alignment, and to aim the fitting to a convenient direction. Any way but straight down! Leg will zap it!! I operated it at least half a dozen times, with no leakage and no binding. Starting pressure should be 120 psi. Lee

I did note that the cylinders weren't tight, but never knew that that's how they are supposed to be. I left it as was, because it would get interferance with the strut if I tried to tighten it.
I didn't look at the pressure, but I did on the other one, and one pump on my robart pump gave me 160# on the gauge.
Too late to stop the shipment now. If you get it ,and the cylinder seems to be too tight, then I guess that I need to plead ignorance on that, but I'm thinking you won't find it like that.
It's no biggie.

Good 'nuf, Don. I'll turn them around very quickly. By the way, have you ever verified the calibration on that gage? Some of the gages, especially on the inexpensive tire inflator types, are notoriously erroneous. I built a gear for a local friend about 4 years or so ago, and he called to tell me that at 100 psi, the gear struggled to come up. SoI had him bring everything over, including the pump, and checked it out. To get 100 psi, the gage had to read 140 psi!!! At 100 psi gage, his actual pressure was 45 psi!! His gage was terrible, but as long as you know the discrepancy, you can allow for it. But check it regularly! Lee

Never checked the gauge accuracy, but 160 is pegged on the robart. I suppose I can get something to check it against.
The other gear flops open AS I pump it, so I know that it needs less than the pressure it ended up recording.

If I remember correctly, I think the robart airtanks are to be pumped to only 100#,per them anyway, but all tanks have a factor of safety built in, and I'm sure that I can pump them up to over 120# with no problem.
I had a stubborn small leak on my last p-40, and I cheated my way around it by just adding capacity. The plane had so much room, that I was able to put a large tank in parallel with the regular tank. I'll have plenty of air,and pressure, to make your manly-man gear work just fine for me.
I'm confident that it'll work for me this next time out, and then I'll just be waiting on the air kit to finish this all up and be good to go.

Hi all. On Dons' set, I found the cyl. tightened, so checked it without touching anything, at 120 psi.. After a dozen operations, no leaks. So I loosened the cyl slightly, again, no leaks. Took the cyl. off and leak checked it in water. No leak. I'm totally puzzled. But I changed the cylinder barrel, and slightly tightened the o-ring compression. So will await a report from Don. Have another set coming, that ran into a concrete curb!! Only one sustained some damage, and sounds like an easy fix. He didn't say what happened to the curb!! I got a note from Robart yesterday, saying they expected to start shipping air kits "shortly". Not very definite, but at least they told me something, and I believe they will be shipping soon. Seems that their color anodizer got behind on the valve bodies & some other stuff. I'll be sneaking in a 1/5 scale proto in the next couple of weeks. Main difference is slightly longer side rails, and heavier struts. Have a test rig figured out that will simulate my "superb" (???) landings! Working on 2 Bearcats, GEEBEE and B-25 at the moment. gee, sorry to have put you through all that. I wish I had had a heads up that the cylinders were to remain loose.
I know I turned them a little, but *thought* that I returned them to their origional position once I saw that when tight, the nipples would get smacked by the leg....my bad.
I know pivot points can't be tight, but I instinctively thought that a hard point mount should be, hence my thought to tighten them up. Looks like wasted postage and time.....mea culpa!

Now we just have to hope the gremlins don't make them leak again!! Let me know! Years ago, I built a lot of cyls for Dave Platt, and he wanted the mounting threads "sloppy loose"!! Lee

What a glorious day....the new shooters catalogue came from Sportmans Guide, Wednesday is my friday and only a 6 hr half-shift, UPS dropped off 2,000 rounds of back ordered .308, and the landing gear was sitting in the mailbox.
I watched as the gear effortlessly, and smoothly, extended on just a partial pump.....absolutely beautiful, and not a hint of an air leak.
