And that my friends is the way it should be done. Just like the spring-air setup. Strong and reliable. I'm using the 403 with 1/2" robostruts in my TF giant P-47. Would love to use something like that in my BT corsair. Even if the strut necked down to a 3/8" pocket on the retract. That would still be better than a 3/16" wire.

Hi Richard L and all; Perhaps you were not in on the original thread when I first got into this. I have never, and will not do any kind of thin wire hookups. I have gone down as low as 5/16" in some limited circumstances, but I use solid steel then. As for set screws I'm agin 'em! I have occasionally done them, but not single screws. On larger units, I have made my mechanics to take 1/2" struts and inserts for at least 27 years, but this is my first "adventure" with the small 60 sized units, and 1/2" sockets are not practical. I'm trying to make something that will fit very close to the leading edge, and as such the unit must be quite small, and use an unusual rotating mechanism. To try to make my units all things to all people justs dilutes the effort to make a good, solid, trustworthy unit. If I can figure a way, without major problems, to make robostruts or any others work, I will. But I won't compromise the unit for that purpose. I had a meeting with the CNC shop today and discussed the whole thing with Jay, along with other projects, and he doesn't see any major problems making the parts, pending my completeing the final critical part design. I'll try to keep everyone informed on the progress. Thanks to all for many comments that have helped me refine the system. Sincerely; Lee Robinson

I will be there when you're done Lee. I'm starting to see light at the end of the tunnel with the new house so my attentions are returning to my Corsair and I can't wait to see the fruits of your labors holding her up!!!

Hey dere Mark. I thought you had disappeared. Good to see you've got your "lesser" worries straightened out and can almost get back to this serious business of building.

Good morning Voyager et al; (No, I'm not an att'y!) Gotta sound fancy once in a while! It's 5 am and I have about 1.25 eyes open. Sorry I haven't kept up with you the past few weeks. I'm still snowed, and the cnc shop seems to be dragging their heels! I was supposed to get info last Monday, "without fail" and the next time I called him, Wed. I think, they were closed for the Holiday! Oh well, so was I (1 day!). The major holdup is for 2 parts which are extremely difficult for me to make manually, but which should be not difficult for cnc. We'll see! But I'm still at it, and hope to get most of my backlog caught up by Christmas. Hopefully I can have a Christmas present for you "faithful"!! I will be back on with an update as soon as I talk to Jay on Monday. Lee GAD! I just reread it-- "be not"?? should be "not be" QUICK! Hit send before i mess up again!!

Got a question for you Lee but don't know if you're at the stage that you can answer it:

Since my plane building is on hold till your gear is done, I can't measure anything. The engine I am going to use is the RCV90. The ideal prop that the U.S. RCV guru says to use is 18x10 to 20x12.

Will your gear give the clearance needed to run this size prop on the 60 TF Corsair?

Maybe Juice or someone else who is using the RCV could pipe in and let us know what prop he's running.

Thanks.
Len

I doubt it Len. But I'll do a bit of figuring on it. Why on earth would you use an 18 or 20" prop on a 90? Something doesn't sound right. Those are props for 40 or 50 cc engines (2-3 cu.) I use 18-22" props on my MX-50, 50cc(3.1 cu)!! Lee

Scale prop diameter is 20". If the struts are scale in length and the gull bends are scale, then there will be enough ground clearance since the real Corsair has enough ground clearance.

The RCV 90SP has a 2:1 output gearing, so it can spin a large diameter prop. If ground clearance is an issue, then one can always drop the prop diameter and increase the pitch. I believe the largest 2-blade prop the 90SP can spin is an 18x12, so a 17x13 can be used if needed.

I was using a 16.5x8 prop on my 65" H9 Corsair, powered by a YS 110, and there was plenty of ground clearance: http://www.whitetyphoon.com/rc/h9_corsair/movies/SlowIdle.mpg

It looks like I had better look closely at the scale length, relative to the space on the kit plans. But remember, on the full scale Corsair, the oleos were pulled up during retraction a full 4" in order to cleear the rear spar! There is no kit on the market that allows for this. It's one of the things I did on my proto unit for the larger scales (1/4) some years back, and am currently taking a hard look at a new version. By the way, the P-47 pulls up 9"!!! Lee

I have a RCV 90 in a TF corsair, and I am spinning a 15.75 X 13 three blade. Works very well. It won't do 150 mph, but it does have tons of power! Need to be careful of the dreaded torque roll on acceleration though... could get hairy on a missed aproach! Just learn to ease it and it will work great!
