I've got a Nelson Q500 lined up to buy and I've got a few questions regarding it.
It's got a perry carburetor on it that caused problems at anything less than full throttle. It was on a Diamond Dust and flown 2 or 3 times. The covering kept ripping off and the owner lost interest.
I'd like to throttle it at least to a 1/4 throttle setting. I have a Webra TN carb from a Speed .40 that looks like it would work.
Will these engines run at a reduced throttle settings or are they designed to run at full throttle?
Is the glow plug a specialty item?
What amount of Castor oil is recommended?
How high can you go with the Nitro?
What is the life expectancy of the engine at high rpm's with moderate (30%) amounts of Nitro?

Thanks for the info.
Pat

I have the Nelson Q with an ST carb. Idle is very reliable, transition smooth. The engine has been a real pleasure to run. I fly it with typical Q-500 props.

The plug is a specialty item readily available from Performance Specialties. The plugs are not expensive.

The engine is setup from Nelson to run on 15% as that is the fuel used in Q500. I have run mine with 20% and have had no issues with plug life or detonation. Call Dave at Performance Specialties about what is needed to run higher nitro. He is a wealth of knowledge and will not steer you wrong.

I have only run synthetic through mine, 20% by volume.

RossiRay,
When I read about these engines they talk of shimming the sleeve and head. Is yours stock?

Thanks for the info.

Yes, it is as delivered from Perf Spec. I purchased it with the ST carb new from Dave. It is set up as a Q500 engine, same clearences, head shape, etc. Only dif is that huge carb instead of the airvalve. The exhaust muffler is the Q500 unit.
