I have been working on this VQ Models P-38 conversion and I am almost finished. 83" wingspan and a glow wt. of 15-16lbs.It has Spring Air Retracts and fowler flaps. It's a very neat model. I have 2 AXI 4130's with 15X10 props and am using 2 6S4P TP packs. It's getting pretty heavy but I've got 100watts per lb so we'll see. Check it out.

Fantastic!![8D] Please take lots of pics, and a good video when she maidens. I love P-38s, and have been wanting to do one for quite a while. I am looking for a scratch plan, or a good kit in this very range. Where did you buy yours at? Good Luck, Darrell B.

what did the electric power system cost? motors, escs, batteries, charger? how are you wiring this system? i have thought about doing a 38 and am real interested in this setup. ed

Darrell, I bought this from a guy in Florida. He read all the stuff on the glow twin forum about engine flameouts and certain death spiral rolls and I think he just changed his mind. I think the electric motor's reliability will take that fear(hopefully) out of this model. You can order these as an arf or arc at www.vqmodelsaircraft.com I think or just www.vqmodels.com. You may want to wait and see how mine goes. It really is starting to look ready. I had to work on the retracts today for a while and the flaps need adjusting but it looks cool. I'll post more pics as it goes.

Rc3407, I used 2 AXI 4130 16, 77 amp lithium supported speed controls, 6S4P thunder power packs on each motor. I also used a switch set up I got from a idustrial supply house for the cut off between the speed controller and the batteries. I use a regular battery for the servos. Oh and I am using 15X10 props pulling 42 amps. You do the math I don't want to know what I have in it. I got my stuff from New Creations in Willis, TX. 936.856.4630. Mookie - just found you started this thread, so will continue here, as it's more appropriate. The setup you are using should give around 1700 Watts of power - should be plenty! I'm planning on trying TP8000 5S4P packs in order to save a little weight. Hacker C50-8L + 6.7:1 motors and 14 x 10 props gives me around 1600 Watts, which I reckon will still be enough. What retracts are you using?

Gtarling, I am using Spring Air retracts. They seem to be working well during my bench tests. I get about 6 or 7 retractions per tank. I am using a Taskforce cordless electric air pump I bought at Lowes to pump the tank. It is really easy and I plan to refill the tank before each flight. I am getting ready to balance it up now but my camera has been borrowed so I will post the completed plane later. Still need some work on balancing my flaps before maiden as one is lower than the other, not good. Kram says he didn't use the flaps much but I want to get them right.

Beautiful P-38 conversion, mookie! It should fly just fine on that setup. The P-38s that i've seen fly like they are in a track so the wind probably won't affect this big bird of yours. Good luck!

BJ, Sorry man the weather has been bad, hurricanes you know. I also had to fix a flap problem, one lower than the other, and I needed to cut the grass oh and I had to wash my car. OK that's all the excuses I have I need to go for it. It looks so nice sitting there I guess I'm waiting for a perfect day. My next conversion project is a Sea Fury from KMP(the big one) so I need to put this in the air. Hopefully Sunday. Wish me luck.

mookie1, I for one would be very interested in your Seafurry conversion. Which kit is it that you are looking at, and where are you thinking about purchasing it from. I'm always looking for a good deal, and I love these electric conversions. Thanks, Darrell B.

Man the hurricanes will not go away. I am planning a flight this Wed. at a private paved runway. I'll post pics and video; I am going to put a on-board video camera above the cockpit and plan to film from the ground also. I'll keep you posted. mookie

Ok Swampy I tried to fly but one of my servos is glitching and I went and got a new one and it did the same so I aborted mission and saw it as a sign of God. I now need to check all my servo connections that are deep in the fuse. I am starting to fumble, I WILL fly this week. I'll call you to come- you can man a camera. I got one to mount on the plane and it works great I'm definitley putting it on but I also need one on the ground. I'll let you know. Mookie

Mookie, I hear ya, once or twice I've ignored "that feeling" and went ahead with a maiden. The result was usually...well..not good . Now ,if something doesn't feel right,the plane goes back in the truck. What is it? "Discretion is the better part of valor" ;) In any event, good luck troubleshooting the glitch, and pre-flight tests . I'd be more than happy to man a cam ...got a couple digi vid cams myself. BJ, No she has not flown yet. I know I'm a chump but I have not had time to fix the glitchy servo. I changed it then the new one did the same. I am hoping to work on it tonight and fly this week. Sorry for the delay, Mookie

Beautiful conversion. I'd like to see it fly to but best to make sure that big bird is good to go first. How many servos are you running?
