Hi,

Although my original e-conversion on the Hobby Lobby Skylark Pattern Plane used an AXI 4120 motor, I have re-fitted the same PVC coupler mount with an AXI 4130/16, APC 15x8 prop, and two of the ThunderPower 3s2p, 4200mAh packs in series.

The result is virtually unlimited performance pattern flying on a budget! I can do knife edge loops, long knife edge passes across the field, and long vertical runs. Be sure to watch this fantastic flyer at next month's NEAT Fair in Downsville, NY.

I changed stock landing gear from wires under the wing to a longer Carl Goldberg Glass Filled Reinforced (#256) composite gear to gain some ground clearance for my 15x8 prop.

I used 3" Dubro Super Lite (300SL) wheels and some Hangar 9 Funtana 90 wheel pants. The result was a rock solid set of gear mains that look fantastic!

ThunderPower recently upgraded their 2100mAh cell so that the 4200mAh 3s2p packs provide a 40amp continuous current delivery and can also deliver peak currents up to 60amps in short bursts.

The new TP packs are an ounce heavier than the old ones (10.2oz vs. 8.9oz) and slightly thicker in size. They also use thicker guage wires on the new packs that I was very happy to see.

Note that I also moved the rudder servo back into the tail t compensate for the heavier 4130 motor. This was an easy move. I also replaced the stock foam tail wheel with a 0.5oz rubber Sullivan 1.5" tailwheel for some additional weight.

I love the yellow wheel pants and the whole new look. I should have bought one of those when they were on sale. I'll have to wait until the day after thanksgiving sale.

Yes, I must agree this conversion looks awesome. Any more problems lately with loose magnets on the newer AXIs after moderate use?? I had the problem with some 2820-10 motors myself. I know you use AXI motors a lot, Greg.

Any video on this?

Hi Steve,

No video. We flew it twice at the NEAT Fair, once on Thursday and once on Friday morning in the rain but my plan was to have SKS get it on their video for the show.

I haven't had any AXI motor problems other than burning out a 2820/10 on some abusive 3D maneuvers without any aircooling in the cowl...my bad. It made for some impressive smoking though, not usually seen on an electric model!

My friend has had a magnet come loose on his 2820/10 but he epoxied it back in place.

I also had several (5) magnets come loose in my 2820-10. I have had it for a year and in 3 diffeent planes. I glued them back in with epoxy. It seems OK.

I see the Skylark is on sale again at HL. I shouldn't wait to order but I am trying to chose between a Skylark and a H9 Funtana.

I would go with the H9 Funtana since it will be around for a while and you can buy spare parts. The Skylark will, unfortunitly, be discontinued after the remaining supply is gone. The market for pattern planes has bowed to the 3D craze.

Greg,
Bought a Skylark. Planning on flying Sportsman pattern competitions. Not concerned about unlimited vertical, but want strong enough performance for verticals and loops.
Questions: 1: 4120/14 or 4130/16? MotoCalc says that the 4120 should be plenty on a 13x8. Opinion?
2: What duration are you getting on the 3s4p 4200 packs? A friend that flies pattern says to expect 4-5 rounds on day one. I'm thinking about 9 minutes for a flight.
3: Can the packs be "topped off" between flights without damaging them?

Hi Bill,

I would really recommend the 4130/16 motor on a 6s Lithium configuration like two of the 3s2p Thunderpower 4200mAh packs. Although the 4120/14 motor flew it well, you really will want some reserve power for patterns when needed.

Since most of the flight can be done at 1/2 throttle, you'll get 10 minute flights easy. Yes, you can re-peak the packs in between flights. In fact, I recommend it!
