that is terrible, it would have been a dream come true to finish such a project, and it looked like a nightmare attack from nightmare on elm street, its terrible, as it would have been nice to "retire" a plane like that and have it hanging from the cieling, however, what i think, is that they just didnt give it enuf power, its a big heavy draggy plane that weighs 300 lbs, your gonna need more thrust then weight in that situation. and i really hope that no one is giving the pilot **** about it, as anyone would feel bad enuf as it is.

and something that just popped into my head, is that there is over 100 000 members on rcu, so, lets all send him a dollar ! for a b-52 regeneration project ?

Falcon Jet - the crash of the full size B-52 you are referring to was a practise flight for an airshow performance. Pilot in command was indeed known as a hotdogger and as things had gotten to the point that crew were refusing to fly with him (because they thought he'd eventually pile in) his Commanding Officer was flying right seat (co-pilot). While overflying the base, the pilot had accidentally lined up on the explosives storage area (X-area), for which overflight was prohibited and subject to disciplinary measure. The pilot banked and yanked hard trying to avoid this area and stalled the aircraft in. The B-52, having only spoilers for roll control, could not roll out of the bank fast enough. Simply said, the pilot placed the aircraft in an unrecoverable situation. This same pilot had a long history of "incidents" and this incident is used an example in many airforces now as to why reckless behaviour in "developing" pilots should be discouraged. Can't/won't comment on the RC B-52 incident but have watched the video of the crash.

Thanks for setting me straight, In either case, the pilot was at fault. Had heard/read years ago that he was showing off when he lost control, guess you can't believe everything you hear! Still a tragedy though, still makes me sick to watch it. Thank God we have CRM now, that's saved many of lives since it was incorporated.

Thanks again,
Chris.

DLDUDE, I remember the crash you are reffering to, it was a Royal Air Force Canbera Practising For An Air Show. It crashed straight into a lake if I remember Rightly?

Is the owner of the plane on this thread somewhere? If so, have him PM me - I have a video that I think he/she may want to see. It's not of the crash or anything like that, it's just something I'd made from editing an existing video a while ago when I first found the video of this beast flying some patterns in the UK. Video was taken in Merryfield Somerset UK it said.
thought the owner may be able to smile about the plane one more time.

Falcon Jet you are spot on! I would like to say I was just testing, but I got my Nimrod and Canberra mixed upt! - My Father In Law will kill me, he works on the only three Nimrods in the UK!

Any way here are two links to the videos of the real crash.

It is best to right click and "save target as"

I thought it was, but hell, been wrong before. Never heard what the cause of that crash was, whether mechanical or pilot error. The Nimrod is a very impressive aircraft, didn't know there are only three of them left though. Thanks for the video!

Chris.

Falcon,

Not sure if there are only three in the world, but I do know that there are only three in the Royal Air Force in the UK, and they are based at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire, 15 miles from my home!

They are an awesome sight in the skys! They are based with some AWACS for NATO, honestly, the AWACS look good in the air but there is NO COMPARISON for a NIMROD!

I have mixed emotions about this B-52.
For years I have wondered how cool would it be to build and fly something like that. After watching the video, I now know. But I was also very scared about the size of that plane and what it could do to someone, should they get hit. Heck if that plane crashed into a house, the house probably would have burnt down. 40k on a plane?
I don't think I would ever try to do something that large.
Build big, crash big.

That plane looked pretty shakey even in the successful fllight video. The fact that they continued to fly with one landing gear stuck in the down position, indicates to me haste on their part. The second I detect something wrong, I land, that has saved me several times.
that plane looked to be blowing around pretty good on its crash flight, I wonder if the plane got blown into a right turn attitude, and the pilot couldn't tell, and then over corrected the other way. Or maybe he couldn't tell which way the plane was banking, even though we can tell in the video.

Anyway, thanks for the experience of getting to watch something so spectacular.

I was at the trade stands at the time, i was at the show with a mate at the IMAC , BMFA Nationals, aparently it throttled back, rolled over and went in.

The wind was 25mph, everyone was more or less grounded while it was up but it flew over two flight lines where they werent grounded i think.

Its not quite sure what happened yet, it could have been pilot error, or it must have gone into failsafe. Like i say its not quite apparent what happened yet.

There is a school of thought with turbines that you want to burn off fuel before landing a plane with a gear problem.
