I know there are some people doing this for added horsepower but what is the trick to getting the gasoline to mix with the methanol...

Gasoline isn't added to gain HP, you'll actually lose a little. It's usually added for greater economy because the needle has to be wound in to get the correct mixture. The engine may run a little hotter though which is why some people add it in extremely cold climates. I've never heard of any problems getting it to mix but if you try it then make sure you add extra oil as well to keep the oil % the same.
