I have been using 30% heli fuel in my 4 strokes engines for planes.
I heard it will give more RPMs and power.
My question is which fuel runs cooler, the Heli fuel or the typical 4 stroke 15% fuel, the engines Im using have plenty of power and I heard the more % of nitro the worse the fuel compsumption it is, also less nitro might ran the engine cooler?

Motoadve,

I find that the 30% heli fuel does give you more power. However, it also gives you more heat. Nitromethane increases the burn rate of methanol and you have already seen the results with regard to fuel consumption.

If you are not doing competition type flying, then 15% nitromethane is fine for most 4-strokes. If you have to DOUBLE your nitromethane to 30% for a few hundred more rpm, then it seems you might just need a slightly larger engine. :-) It comes down to a matter of choice. Some pilots want to squeeze every bit of power from their engine. I think cooler operating temperatures, lower costs for fuel and long term reliability are not worth the few hundred extra rpm. At about $240 a pop for the FA-91S and about $1000 for the FA-170 R3 radial including exhaust and tools, 30% nitro does not make much sense to me for sport flying. At our field, there are several pilots who routinely use 30% and I am just giving you reasons why I choose to stay with 15% nitro for my 4-strokes.

I believe that alot of the fuels labeled 4-stroke have less than 20% oil (what both Saito and YS reccomend) and tend to be more in the neighborhood of 15-18% . I'll bet your 30% nitro heli fuel has around 24% oil in it... Good for cooling... I personaly prefer to run the higher nitro fuels between 20-30% as the engines just run smoother in all the throtle ranges.
