Well here she is. Three months of hard work. This is a Cessna 170B we are getting ready to deliver to a customer this Thursday. The red one is our next project which is an old WACO RBA. The last one flying. Only 4 made out of the factory. This I believe is a 1932. What yall think! More pics if ya'll want em. Did a lot to the 170. New engine, JPI, etc... I will NEVER own a polished airplane. What a PITA. I have about 4 hours in it. She flies like a dream!

Love the CE-170!

My dream is to have a straight tail 182 for here in the mountains. Tail draggers do have their mystique, but I will say they scare the bejebbies out of this new CFI.

Thanks for the picks!

David

Dave we just did a pre-buy on a straight tail 182 about a month ago. The guy was asking way too much money for the shape it was in. We took the 170 up around the patch today to check an oil pressure adjustment and a tail wheel spring set up. My boss was taxiing onto the runway and told me it was mine. I said naawww go ahead. He looked over at me and said "nope, its yours, I'm dead". I hadn't flown in two weeks and felt out of practice. I took off no problem. I was worried about the tailwheel spring tension, but it felt great. We flew for about 10 minutes to get the oil temp hot and I circled around and entered the pattern. The SOB did it to me again and made me land. All this from the right seat and I only have about 100 hours of TT. Of course he was ready to take over but I settled her into a nice three point full stall landing with 30 deg of flaps. Had a pretty good crosswind. Once we landed he said he touched nothing and that was one of the best landings he has ever seen. No bounces, no tail hops! I was pretty proud! So I guess if he was dead, I would have survived and that is what counts right. This guy has 5000+ hours of taildragger time. Must have some merit coming from him! Had a blast, but had to cut it short to go pick up my kids from school! Where in the mountains do you live?

Hello LearjetMech,

I live about 10 miles South of Downtown Denver, and 5 miles west of Centennial Airport (KAPA). I fly out of Aspen Flying club that is on the east side of the Centennial field. They have a Citabria, but I need to concentrate on my CFII. The thing I like about the straight tail 182 is the thinner fuselage and still having the 235 horse engine. It would be perfect for the mountains around here. But, I still need the mountain checkout first.

I gather by your user name that you work on Lears'?

I tell everyone this, but I will fly a Lear before I die

Thanks again for the pics, and I do like the polished look, until I have to polish it

David

I saw a WACO bipe fly with a jet engine at Grissom AFB. WOW!!!!!
The take off took about 15 feet. He did a great aerobatic routine. I found my home video of it a few weeks ago, and watched it over and over. A little weird, but still amazing.

His name is Jimmy Franklin and he just did an airshow this weekend in Ft. Worth. I didn't get there until late today and he was flying as I was driving up. F15 demo had started just as I parked. What an impressive aircraft!!! Then the 15 linked up with a P47 and they flew a short routine together. Awesome!!

Cool stuff LearjetMech. Please keep us updated on the WACO.

Jimmy Franklin is my absolute favorite air show performer. And to give you an idea of how exciting he is; I invited my father-in-law to go to the Indy Air Show a couple of years ago. (It was during the Corsair Gathering.) Now my father-in-law is not easily impressed. But he laughed, almost the entire trip home, about the way that biplane climbed and tumbled with that jet engine slung underneath. And then to fly it that way with a wing walker! When I invite him to other air shows, he first asks if Jimmy Franklin is going to be there.
